  • Programs are slow to respond

I'll try to explain this the best I can. A computer that I have not the one listed in any of my sigs is having a little issue. Sometimes when I turn on the computer I will open up a program the program will open but it's like it opens in slow motion as the program opens you see it slowly go into its open state. You actually see it opening. I know you can always somewhat see a program open but this is like it is in slow motion. It does this for all the programs that I open and close. This will actually go away later or sometimes if I restart it. When I go into the bios the bios is very choppy. It is an ASRock board and when I contacted them they said to reset the bios. When I did it helped but now it is doing it again. I have reset the bios again and it helped again the other day but now it is doing it again. Does this sound like a bios problem? Does anyone seem to know? I don't know how else I could explain what is happening.

It is an ASRock Z87 Pro4, AMD XFX 7850 Vid card, GSkill ripjaws memory, Xeon E3-1220 V3, Corsair TX650 PSU, Windows 7 Pro.

Re: Programs are slow to respond

My first reaction would be your OS drive, but I see you have a Samsung 830 SSD. But the behavior in the BIOS does not point to a drive, unless the two are unrelated.

Is the POST time, before you get into the BIOS, and before Windows starts booting, any different in its length? IOW, is the cold boot start up time slower?

Normally it is the drive programs are installed on that would cause delays in starting a program. Attempting to dismiss your SSD as the issue, how full is that drive? Or put another way, how much free space is on the drive?

Do you use the Samsung Magician software? If so, have you ever run its manual TRIM optimization feature? How about the performance test available in Magician, what are the results? Ever run another benchmark on the SSD, ATTO, Crystal, or AS SSD?

Are you using the Intel SATA ports for your drives? The top two SATA ports are connected to the ASMedia SATA controller, which can be erratic and does not perform as well as the Intel ports.

Moving on, have you checked the speed of the CPU while in Windows? Is it running at its rated speed, or is it stuck at a lower speed? Do you use default BIOS settings for the CPU?

A PSU that is going bad can cause strange things to happen in a PC. Or the power connections in the PC might need to be "refreshed", meaning just unplugging them and plugging them in again to be sure they are making a good connection.

OS drive is right at half full. No magician software. I am pretty sure I am using the intel ports but will do a double check on that. The problem goes on when I am in the bios also. Very erratic when moving the mouse at it jumps from on place to another when moving it around. What do I need to do to check the speed of the CPU while in windows? What settings should I used in bios? I can't tell you for sure about the PSU other than it is a Corsair.

Re: Programs are slow to respond

ASRock has the AXTU program for monitoring hardware, but a better one can be found here, free of course:

        HWiNFO, HWiNFO32/64 - Download

You can download the installer program, or just the "portable" .zip file, extract it and run the application.

The main display with the lightning bolt in it (click it) will open the Sensor Status display, that will show you more information about your PC's speed, temperature, voltage, and power usage than you may ever want to know. But it might just show you where the problem is.

A problem seen both in the BIOS and Windows tends to indicate a higher level, basic hardware problem.

Can you explain what "choppy" means when you are in the BIOS? I have an idea but want to be sure what you mean.

You could also check the Windows logs, such as Event or the Windows System log, for errors and warnings.

When you are moving the mouse and you want to go to a certain area on the screen you move the mouse but the mouse does not respond right away and then it just jumps from one spot to the other spot. You click on the mouse and it does not react right away. I have tried a different mouse but all seem to do the same thing.
