    I built a new computer.

I can't even get into BIOS. Or anything. I built the machine to this spec:

    CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3GHz (BX80648I75820K) with Arctic Freezer I30 cooler
MOBO: ASRock X99 WS EATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard ( Intel X99 chipset)
    RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 (2x8GB) DDR4 2400 (F4-2400C15D-16GRR)
    VID: HIS iPower IceQ X² Boost H270QM2G2M Radeon R9 270 (2GB 256-Bit GDDR5)
    SSD: Crucial M500 240GB M.2 SATA3 Internal Solid State Drive CT240M500SSD4)
    PSU: Enermax ERV1000EWT-G 1000W

And consistently get error code 53 (no usable memory detected). Except if I do some weird things (put one RAM stick in slot #6), I can get code 67 (chipset initialization error). But it's pretty much 53. If I put the ram in the 2 slots the motherboard says to use (for people who only have 2 sticks), I get 53. Every time.

So basically: I built a new computer, and can't use it. Can't get into BIOS (my machine has 2, and I've tried both, and clearing CMOS too). Can't do anything.

Can't tell what's really broken. I don't have another DDR4-capable machine to try the RAM in. I don't have a way to test the RAM.

What do I do? Strip down everything and send it back? It was $1600. I think I'm going to try out new RAM, but it may be the motherboard.

The GSkill people are pretty deadset that 2 sticks of ram can't possibly both have problems.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. This is the totality of my life right now! :)

Can't POST without memory, and can't get into the BIOS without memory.

The memory you have is listed in your board's memory support list, although it has F4-2400C15Q-32GRR, the only difference being a dual and quad channel kit.

You can check what BIOS version your board has with the stickers on the BIOS chips, right next to the Dr Debug display. Some of the later BIOS versions include memory compatibility updates. But you can't update the BIOS without being able to get into the BIOS. The dual BIOS chips on your board will have the same version on them from the factory.

For two DIMMs, you are using slots DDR4_A1 and DDR4_B1, the two black slots in the set of slots to the left of the CPU.

Each time you change the slots the DIMMs are mounted in, you should clear the BIOS before trying to start the PC again.

It looks like this board uses the single latch type of memory slots. Be very sure they are seated correctly. Looking at the tops of the DIMMs does not always reveal if they are seated correctly. If you look at the edge of the DIMM slot, and then look at the DIMM circuit board just above the DIMM slot, while looking from one end to the other, you can see much better if the DIMM is fully seated in the slot.

Otherwise, for code 53 the description mentions remounting the CPU. That is a lot of work for potentially no reason. Some CPU coolers can be tightened down so much they can interfere with the pins in the CPU socket. If you think that is possible, try backing the screws off a bit evenly around the socket.

Hi, Thank you for your assistance,

VERY good eye catching the dual/quad discrepancy. I had not noticed that. The memory is just so expensive. I didn't want to get $400 of memory. :)

The BIOS version (or versions, since I have 2, with a switch to choose) is P1.30.

My DIMMs were fully in, there is a clip, and they were clipped. I used the correct slots.

Alas, I just can't get it to post. Error 53, every time.

The dual and quad difference should not make a difference in compatibility. You should be able to use one DIMM from either kit and it would work. The only difference in the two kits is four matched DIMMs instead of two.

Did you try one stick at a time for a test?

You could also try removing the video card just to see if the POST code changes.

Yup. Did all that. No go. Bent CPU pin seeming more likely now that I've read about the new Intel socket and how much people hate it for bending pins too easily. It's been 15 years since I kicked AMD to the curb, but I think the next computer I build is going to be an AMD. If my CPU&Mobo are damaged, it was a $660 mistake, and no amount of company loyalty is worth burning $660 over.

The first version of the 2011 socket was released at the end of 2011, so a little over three years old.

While the format of the new 2011-3 socket is different, both sockets have the same number of contacts, 2,011, and a few versions of the 2011-3 socket have more contacts.

Regardless, the Intel HEDT 2011 processor socket is not new. Intel has used the pin-less processor design for many years, and the fragile nature of the contacts in the socket are a reality PC builders have lived with for all those years. I have socket 775, 1366, 1155, and 1150 boards, multiples models of three of those types, and never had a bent pin in a processor socket.

Considering how may professional work station and server boards used with Xeon processors that use the same design are in use today, this design has not cost Intel much business.

No reason to have the pins in the socket exposed for very long at all. Have the processor ready, open the socket latch or latches, remove the protective cover if it remains in the socket, insert the processor in the socket, remove the protective cover from the socket lid if still in place, close the lid and secure the latches. Pins exposed to damage for several seconds only if done correctly.

If a few pins in the socket are damaged, that won't ruin the processor. I've never heard of damaged pins causing a processor to fail. So a damaged socket does not cause the CPU to be worthless.

Your problem is more likely a memory compatibility issue caused by an earlier BIOS version and the random luck (bad) of selecting memory that does not match the earlier compatibility factors. The X99 platform with DDR4 memory is new, and will unfortunately have issues that are still being worked out.

I wish I could tell you which memory would work with your CPU and board. I don't get why ALL DDR4 memory does not work with the one and only platform that is able to use that memory.

              As an update:

It seemed to have been the RAM.

I bought a quad channel kit instead:

              Crucial 16GB Kit Ballistix Sport (4x4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 2400mHz (PC4-19200) CL16 (16-16-16) 1.2V non-ECC unbuffered Memory Kit (Model BLS4K4G4D240FSA) // $174.17

              It worked.

Of course, now I want 32GB. So I have a new problem: The 8Gx2 kit I installed won't play with the kit I just mentioned. It is:

              Crucial 16GB Kit Ballistix Sport (2x8GB) 288-pIN DDR4 2400mHz (PC4-19200) (BLS8G4D240FSA.16FAD)

              The cycle continues!

                Dear ClintJCL

Do you install two new (2x8GB) memory and (4x4GB) memory together?
For memory installation, please install same frequency, module name, brand, chip-type, memory capacity memory to X99 WS motherboard.
As refer user manual page 16 of memory installation guide:http://download.asrock.com/manual/X99%20WS.pdf

                Thank you.

Yes I did. I did not realize I would lose that versatility.

Here's a problem: My CPU fan covers up one of my slots. So I can't have 8 sticks. I can have 7, but 8.

Does this doom me to only having 4 sticks?!

                    Dear ClintJCL,

                    Hello,
Your problem seems related with CPU FAN size block the memory slot.
For better compatibility, we suggest to install Intel original CPU FAN on x99 WS motherboard or other small size of CPU FAN to try.

It's too late to return it now. That's why I wanted to know if I had options.

If install 7 stick of same memory module from our memory support list, X99 WS should can boot up normally.
But for better stability, we still suggest to refer user manual page16 to install memory on the slot:

This is for anyone having the same problem:

IT IS LIKELY YOUR CPU FAILING.

I had this exact issue (except my system was running for a year before the mobo/cpu died) and spent over a week debugging, ordering new parts, ordered a 2nd CPU (so I figured there was no way it was also bad) trying every configuration possible. Eventually I gave up and bought all new parts (not x99/5820k) and got my system up and running (using the older same ram, so that was not the problem).

Luckily my friend bought the same exact system and his was up and running. I wanted to put the problem to rest, so he installed my CPU into his fully functional system...and guess what?? Error 53. He swapped his CPU back in and it was fully functional. So don't be afraid to assume your CPU has failed (or also the 2nd RMA one you got is also broken) if you have tried multiple Motherboards all with error 53.

                            It was actually incmopatible ram.

I too have purchased a X99 WS-E/10G. With 4 sticks of g.skill f4-3000c15q-32grbb I get error 55. All memory has been removed and reset and swapped slots. When set up with only 1stick in A1 I get a bd error. Pulling my hair out... All memory in A1, B1, C1, D1. Help!
