  • GB Z170X Gaming 7 with Samsung 950pro - 512gb NVME m2. ssd.

Looking for feedback from owners of the Samsung 950pro m.2 pci-e ssd either 256 or 512 gb NVME version on a Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 7 MB.

Since I had serious problems to get this mb to recognise the Intel 750 pci-e ncve ssd, same was returned to the retailer. (still not sure if the mb was the cause or de intel itself?)

But I now would like to have the new Samsung 950pro m.2. ssd. as a boot drive for my Windows 10 Pro 4 bits set up.

Tks. kindly for the feedback in advance.

    Re: GB Z170X Gaming 7 with Samsung 950pro - 512gb NVME m2. ssd.

I have a Z170X SOC Force Board and have 3 x 950 PRO 512GB M.2 PCI-E NVME drives, in a Raid 0 config, with 2 volumes set at the Raid controller, 1 x 200gb for the system drive and the rest as a data drive. I know it's not the same board as you have, but I thought I could give you some feedback on running those drives on a Z170 chipset Gigabyte board, as the Gaming 7 would have the same Intel RST Raid Controller that is on the Z170X SOC.

The drives work perfectly fine on that controller and you can put them in Raid no problem. Just be aware that for every M.2 drive you install, you lose 2 x Intel Sata ports, but luckily there is the ASMedia Sata Controller, so you then just put anything else Sata in those ports.

Speed wise i'm getting 3700MB sequential read and 3500MB sequential write in CrystalDiskMark for my Raid 0 disks. Even though it is in Raid 0 and usually Raid 0 is a lot faster than a single drive, it's because of the DMI 3.0 limit of 4GB that is the barrier you hit. Plus since the 950 Pro is already at 2500MB/1500MB read/write, its already fast to begin with, but in Raid 0 at 3700/3500MB it is extremely fast. I am running Win 10 Pro x64 and everything just loads up instantly and I have my bios set to Fast Boot, so from when I turn on my computer as in a cold boot, to it being at the login screen to enter my password, it takes 3 seconds, that's how fast the drives are. I have not noticed any delays or lags at all in day to day use either, all applications and games install and load extremely fast, as in pretty much instantly.

If you are setting up a Raid using these drives, then you need to have the Intel RST install driver on a usb disk, and during the Windows 10 install you will need to load it in order for the install to see the Raid drives. Then after Windows 10 is installed, be sure to also install the Intel RST User Interface Application as well.

If you are installing the drive as a standalone drive, then Windows install will recognise the drive without any additional drivers. After you have installed Windows 10, be sure to download and install the Samsung 950 Pro M.2 Win 10x64 specific driver, as this does increase performance over the standard Windows M.2/PCI-E drivers.

You will be very happy with the drives, as they are they best drive on the market at the moment.

I've had zero issues with my Z170X Gaming 7 and MZVPV 256GB M.2 ssd. Runs like a champ.

I`m thinking in buying a Samsung 960 (EVO or PRO) to work with my GA-Z170X-Gaming 7... Do you think it will work?I'll have trouble installing? Thanks!

The Samsung 950 pro m2 worked perfectly on my Z170x gaming 7 mb.

Even though the benmarks are great with the m2 ssd, I went back to a normal Samsung evo 850 ssd
since i daily use I did not experience a lot of difference.

          Boot time W10 normal SSd - 20 / 24, m2 ssd 24/28 seconds.

So if you want to save money go for a normal SSD.
