can't open root drive or folders

When i double left click on hard disk in My Comp in xp pro, the icon is different than for my two cd drives. The strange thing is i double left click and instead am presented with windows xp search. the same thing happens when i try to open a folder on the desktop. or say my shared folder in kazaa program i get the xp search. What could possibly be damaged in here, and what root command or code can repair this annoiance.

Any help will be doubly appreciated...
