  • EP45-DS3R - PC won't go to S3 sleep mode

    Hi,

    spec:
    GIGABYTE board EP45-DS3R Bios F10 (latest non-beta)
    2 X 2GB of GSkill DDR2-800 PK @ 2.0V 4-4-4-12
    E8400 @ 3600MHZ (398 FSP , 400 MCH)
    Vista 32 SP1

    problem:
When I go to S3 sleep mode all the fans continue to work (CPU, GPU, case) and the power led stays on (the manual states it will go off in S3/S4 modes)
The screen blanks out as it doesn't get a signal (which is good...) but the PC is not really in S3 mode.
When I move my mouse, it resumes and the screen gets the signal again.

Any idea how to get the PC to sleep and all the fans to power down so it doesn't produce heat and noise (and saves electricity while at it...) ?

    Thanks.

Re: EP45-DS3R - PC won't go to S3 sleep mode

You need to go into Control Pannel, Power Options and then Advanced Options. Then Go through that list of stuff cause you will find some good things, but I think your problem will be at the bottom. Go To multimedia Settings and probably under "When sharing Media" setting it need to be Allow the computer to sleep. Hope fully that will fix it.

You sure you in S3 and not S1? Check the BIOS settings.

the multimedia settings seems to fix it.
        Thank you!

Is there any down side to putting the PC to sleep?

I hope not. Ive been putting my computer to S3 Sleep for years. I'm not entierely sure what happens if the Power goes off when its in sleep but I think its ok. You should really have a UPS anyway. Glad I could help out.

Re: EP45-DS3R - PC won't go to S3 sleep mode

new problem... now the PC restarts after waking up from S3 sleep.

While I tested the sleep mode yesterday, I started sleep mode manually and left it for 1-5 mins and the PC woke up fine (tried 3 times).

I left the PC in sleep mode (auto after 3 hours of inactivity) over night (about 12 hours) and when I woke it up by moving the mouse it re-started the PC.

I checked the event log and there was nothing there other then the message that the PC was restarted unexpectedly [on the time I tried to wake it up]

There was no power failure (I have also UPS)

            Ideas?

Well looking on the Website it shows that the F10 BIOS is suppost to fix the S3 Resume issue in Vista, But i see that you are already using F10. You could try the F11c. GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - BIOS - GA-EP45-DS3R (rev. 1.0)

not a fan of beta bioses... :)
it does wake up fine in some cases it looks like. I can't think why the length of the sleep would matter.
is there any log/event I can see when it went to sleep/woke up and maybe more info on the problem?

I've read about some issues with ATI catalyst.. maybe my HD4850 cauess the problem

                Thanks.

Re: EP45-DS3R - PC won't go to S3 sleep mode

another question about the Vista S3 sleep mode:
It's now seems to mostly work fine, however, the PC wakes up automatically every day at 13:00, with wake reason the event log is: *RTC*.
Now, Vista checks for updates everyday at 13:00, so I guess it is related to the problem.
my question, can I tell vista not to wake the PC up to check for updates [only check if PC is up]? - I don't want to disable auto-check-fir-updates.

                  Thanks.

There's a "Resume by Alarm" option in BIOS, what is it set for?
                    HPET may also be related.

I've never changed those settings so they are set to the defaults:
                      resume by alarm: disabled
                      HPET: enabled

RTC meand Real Time Clock, so I figured they are related.
Could be that Vista enable it when going to sleep?
Are there any power options related to the automatic updates?

                          none that I can find.
nor could I find the scheduling time for vista to search for new updates

In XP it's in automatic updates in My Computer properties, should be in Vista System if it is the same as Windows 7.

All I can find in Vista automatic updates settings is the time for installing new updates, but not a time to search for and download new updates. ( I do not have the updates install automatically, just downloaded)
