This should probably have been posted in the Storage section. Sorry.
I would appreciate if a mod could move it.
Ok, Ive read around alot, thought I was ready to set up my first RAID array...
Well, to set the arrays up was easy, but after that my computer wasn't really happy with me...
Actually, it wont do anything I tell it to, so I need some parenting help, which is why I came to my favorite tech forum to get some assistance!
Disks: Samsung F3 1 TB
Array: 1+1 TB + 1+1 TB in RAID 1 (two arrays)
MOBO: GB X58-UD5, RAID from ICH10R
OS: Win 7 Pro x64
Heres my original plan and what I did:
Replace my old (250 GB + 250 GB + 1 TB) drives, with the new four 1 TB drives.
Partition setup:
Disk 1: one for OS (50 GB) and one for games (200 GB)
Disk 2: one for games (250 GB) (no I definitely didnt use all the space :p )
Disk 3: My Docs, music, pics, movies and everything else that is not a game or OS
How did I get the data off of those and on to the new drives:
Made bootable Acronis True Image Home 2010 and cloned the partitions so the structure was about the same as the old setup (with a few enhancements)
QUESTION: I didnt actually format the corresponding RAIDed disk, as I thought the RAID setup thing would take care of that...
Is that correct, or might that be the cause of the problem? I do have a bootable for Acronis Disk Director as well, so if I need to format all the drives before cloning, please let me know.
Cloned the C: and D: drive (disk 1), shut down and removed the old primary active.
Cloned the M: drive (disk 3) shut down, started and hoped for the best.
Booting...BOOTMGR is missing or currupt...
Booting Windows CD, replacing BOOTMGR...
Booting, windows start loading but right before the log on screen should appear I get a BSOD.
The BSOD doesnt even "load" properly before it reboots so cant catch a letter.
Thinking... bluescreen... hmmm...
Disabling RAID in BIOS, reboots, boots properly into windows! (meaning partition is good)
Thinking some more, wanna cry...
Tries a lot of stuff that comes to mind, used quite a few hours on that.
Decides to reinstall Windows, backs up the registry and other files that might be good to replace after installation so I maybe wont need to reinstall everything.
Booting Windows CD, comes to the page with the drives listed to choose the OS install disk.
Msg saying on the bottom:
Thinking, awe jeez come on! Why do you need a system partition in the first place?
Thats what Im gonna make!
Thinking some more and reading, downloading Intel RAID driver from the Intel website, putting it on a USB thumb drive, trying to load the driver before trying to install...
First when I load it, nothing happens and the same msg as above shows up, when I try to load the driver 2nd time I get a BSOD with STOP: 0x0A, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
This was kinda messy, any questions, ask.
Hope some of you got a solution :)
If it would be a good idea to run through the whole RAID setup and disk cloning process, please tell me exactly in what order things must be done and whether I have to format the drives first or not.
Running SLI btw, tried to remove one of the cards with no luck!
Thanks!
