  • Ivy Bridge processors and Asrock Z68 Motherboards

I wish to purchase an Asrock Z68 Fatal1ty Z68 Professional Gen3 or theZ68 Extreme7 Gen3 motherboard with the view of installing the new Ivy Bridge CPU (when it becomes available).

After doing some homework I was informed that the above boards have the Cougar Point PCH installed which is suitable for the Sandy Bridge but not for the Ivy Bridge.

If I wish to install an Ivy Bridge processor I will need a Panther Point PCH which will be paired with the Ivy Bridge processors. (Panther Point PCH will have integrated USB 3.0)

Unfortunately these PCH chips are not interchangeable on the motherboards so it appears that I will have to forgo my purchase until motherboards are available with the Panther Point PCH installed.

Re: Ivy Bridge processors and Asrock Z68 Motherboards

Does anyone know when Asrock are likely to supply motherboards with the Panther Point PCH chipset ?

I assume the current range of Sandy Bridge motherboards have the Cougar Point PCH chipset fitted.

Asrock do supply a wealth of information in their specifications but fail to indicate which PCH chipset is installed on their motherboards.

I did email this question to Asrock's technical help but so far have not received a reply.

Re: Ivy Bridge processors and Asrock Z68 Motherboards

There are many claims that Ivy Bridge will be "compatible" with Z68 motherboards, but native USB 3.0 support will require Panther Point. I think that the safest way to go is to wait for new Panther Point motherboards to be released, probably at the same time as Ivy Bridge is released.

If Marvell 6gb sata is used, I will probably wait for an Ivy Bridge setup that has Intel 6gb sata support. Hopefully I won't have a long wait.

Re: Ivy Bridge processors and Asrock Z68 Motherboards

          Hi Emily.

While I have your attention do the current Asrock Z68 motherboards

1/. Use the Cougar Point PCH chipset ?

2/. If so when are motherboards going to be available with the Panther Point PCH chipset fitted ?

I assume Asrock will be producing motherboards at some stage with the Panther Point PCH chipset.

You say the "Z68 Professional Gen3 and Z68 Extreme7 Gen3 will support Ivy Bridge CPU."

But support to what degree ?

Will these boards support native USB 3.0 or is the Panther Point PCH chipset required to do this ?

Please kindly do not tell me not to worry as that is usually my first reaction when I hear that phrase.

I much prefer straight answers to a simple questions.

Re: Ivy Bridge processors and Asrock Z68 Motherboards

              Hi profJim

So if I finally have my facts straight the Z68 is actually a Cougar Point PCH chipset.

And the new Z77 is the top of the line in the range of Panther Point PCH chipsets which is really needed to take full advantage of the extra features of the Ivy Bridge CPU.

I am only going to build my computer once and I am determined to do it right.

Yes the Ivy Bridge CPU might be pin compatible with a Z68 board.

But why would anyone in their right mind waste their money plugging an Ivy Bridge CPU into a Z68 board and not gain any of the extra features available on the Ivy Bridge CPU ?

So like you I will be waiting for a Z77 equipped motherboard for my new Ivy Bridge computer build.

              Patience is a virtue.

              Thunder Bird.

Ah, another convert to "compromise and do it my way."
                But....
.... from Haswell (microarchitecture) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Haswell is the codename for a processor microarchitecture to be developed by Intel's Oregon team as the successor to the Sandy Bridge architecture.[1] Haswell will use a 22 nm process.[2] CPUs based on the Haswell microarchitecture are expected to be released in 2013, approximately one year after the March-April 2012 release of Ivy Bridge, according to Intel's Tick-Tock strategy. Intel showed a working Haswell chip at the 2011 Intel Developers Forum.[3]

The question in my mind is will ASRock release Z77 and Z75 motherboards ?

I have already checked out the new X58 and X79 series motherboard specifications and none of them are suitable for my purpose (unless I buy a graphics card).

The Z68 series motherboards have on-board Intel HD Graphics available and a HDMI connection.

Whereas the X58 and X79 series motherboards (Under Audio, Video and Networking) list Graphics as being -n/a plus none of these X58 and X79 motherboards have a HDMI connection on-board.

I want to be able to play high definition media files direct to my large screen TV and I have been given to understand that the on-board Intel HD Graphics are quite capable of this function.
