On a new system build, windows 7 64bit, samsung 840 120gb ssd,
(3570k, 8gb ram etc.)

I want to optimize windows for the SSD operation. Question..
Turn off page files?
Disable prefetch and superfetch? If disabling the 'fetch's,
is it necessary to set in registry:
enableprefetcher to 0
enablesuperfetcher to 0 ?
Windows should be set for trim (I will check with fsutil behavior query)

Do not believe all the optimization guides you read on the Internet, most of them are designed to increase the hitrates to websites. The situation now is totally different to what it was with Windows XP, or even Vista.

Basically Windows 7 is SSD aware so you can allow it to do it's thing. I read the Microsoft blogs and they seem to have spent a lot of manhours testing SSDs with various configurations finding the ideal configuration. Windows 7 even treats slower SSDs different from faster ones- based on the results of Windows Experience Index.

All you need to remember is
-When installing Windows just do a quickformat, not a full format
-After installing Windows and all relevant drivers run the WEI, by doing this the OS discovers how fast your drive is and accordingly turns off unnecessary services

You also may want to manually check that defrag schedules are turned off for the SSD.
Yes you can use that command to check that TRIM is working- I know it does help us sleep better at night.

Regarding the page file let Windows manage it. It will not be used excessively since you have enough RAM. It will still be used though and for performance reasons the best place to have it is on an SSD. If you really want to turn it off you can experiment with doing so and see if you notice anything...

Check out the Samsung Magician software user manual for ssd optimization.
I manually set the over-provisioning on my 128GB Samsung 830 to ~ 15%.
Samsung recommends 7% - 10% for the 830.
