    Hey all!

I have a problem with my PC, and it's very similar to the problem described here. I started experiencing issues about a year ago while running Windows 7. To begin with my computer would lock up completely in Windows, and there was no specific pattern to it. I could play a game for hours without any problems, but after exiting to Windows it could take as few as 5 minutes before it locked up. And since this issue is so random, it could be hours before it locked up. The image got stuck and there was a buzzing electronic sound coming from my headset. After rebooting I checked Windows' event log, but there was nothing of interest there.

I thought this problem was memory related to begin with, so I ran Memtest86 for a few days. No errors were produced. After a while I thought it could be my video card which was a Club3D GeForce GTS 250 Green Edition, so I purchased a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 (also in preparation for Diablo 3). At the time I played Microsoft Flight, and I noticed that the game would load very slow (about 1-2 minutes to get into the menus after starting the game). At this point I was suspecting that my system drive, a Western Digital VelociRaptor 150GB, could be the culprit, but I decided to not swap it out.

Around the time when Diablo 3, the problem became so severe I gave up. I could play Diablo 3 for hours without any issues (it never locked up in game), but while in Windows it would crash. Shortly after the D3 release I was trying to chat with a friend of mine on Skype. I host a website for him on a linux server I own, so I was basically doing some customer support. While doing this I had Skype and PuTTY running, but my computer locked up so many times within minutes of reboot I abandoned my desktop for a few months.

In October/November I decided to have another go at my desktop, so I purchased an Intel SSD 520 and Windows 8 Pro. After installing everything, I discovered that the desktop was still not healthy, but the symptoms had changed. It doesn't lock up anymore, now it randomly reboots, and it happens everywhere. I've had it happen while the system is idle on the login screen, while playing Wordament, and while in BIOS settings. The only change I've made so far is to manually set the RAM voltage to 1.66V (above 1.65V as specified here) and disconnecting all HDD's apart from the SSD. The problem persists.

After the system reboots, it starts up only to boot down within 1-2 seconds. Then it stays off for 1-2 more seconds and boots up again automatically. At this point it boots without problems and stays on until the next time it restarts, which could be anywhere in the scope of 5-20 minutes.

Right now I'm wondering if the problem could be the motherboard, although I've spent way too much money troubleshooting this PC, so before I start wasting more money on a system that won't work, I figured I'd ask around if anyone could help me find the source of this issue. I haven't played around much with the BIOS settings as I'm not familiar with tweaking hardware.

    Thanks!

Edit: I just got a BIOS error that the system had problems booting up due to overclocking. I guess my change of DRAM Voltage to 1.66V wasn't well received, so I changed it back to Auto.

    Re: Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5 random reboots

Can you borrow a power supply to test with?
Your HX850 is a top tier power supply but your problems might be caused by your psu.

Make sure that all power supply cables are secure and fully seated.
After your psu is disconnected from the A.C. power cord, carefully remove and re-seat the 24-pin and 8-pin psu power cables.
You should also check that all other wires and cables are secure and that your memory and plug in cards are fully seated.

      Re: Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5 random reboots

I might be able to borrow another PSU. How many watts would a spare psu need? I have a unused Fractal Design 400W lying around, would that suffice (not sure how much the GTX demands)?
I'll go over everything and check if they are seated. When I swapped Video Card in May I actually had to change my case as the old one was too short for the monstrous GTX 670. I made sure everything (cables, memory modules, etc) was seated well while doing it, but I might have missed something.

        Re: Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5 random reboots

A good quality 400 watt psu should be fine for any tasks that don't demand a lot of power for your video card.
The guideline is that your should NOT draw more than 80% of the rated psu capacity for an extended period of time, such as gaming.
Detailed video card reviews should include how much power the complete system draws from the wall plug while running demanding games, where the system and the video card are usually highly overclocked.

Cheaply made power supplies often can't deliver their full rated power.
A quality psu will have over current protection (OCP) that will shut down the power supply if it exceeds its limits.
If your 400 watt psu is 80% efficient, then it will draw a maximum of about 500 watts from the wall outlet to deliver 400 watts of power to your system.

Is your cpu or video card overclocked? If yes, how much?

          Re: Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5 random reboots

I haven't overclocked anything. I've never tried that. Every component in my system runs at default.

I'll check if all cables, memory modules and components are seated well. If everything seems to be in order I'll try my 400W psu with little load on my system to test if that fixes my issue. I won't do any demanding tasks such as running games that require much power. I haven't even been able to install any games on my system as the reboots are so sporadic. Since the reboots occur randomly, I could do something simple as web browsing while testing the 400W.

                Re: Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5 random reboots

After re-connecting the 24-pins and 8-pins connectors and checking that every cable is properly set and that my video card is properly seated (it's the only component I have in my machine), I have been able to use my computer for one hour without any reboots. I haven't tested it extensively, though. Right now it's updating Windows, but when that's complete, I'll download Microsoft Flight and play some to see if it can handle that.

While going over everything I did notice something which I had forgotten about. The upper part of the primary PCI-Ex16 socket is loosened from the motherboard. I remember seeing this when I removed my old GTS 250. It's my own fault for trusting a manufacturer to build a PC, I guess. However, this made me plug the new GTX 670 in the 2nd slot. Could this cause problems?

i think thats your problem, whats the rated voltage of that ram at 1600mhz? my ocz reaper were 1.65v rated, plus 1.15v qpi/vtt is way too low imo, even for a non overclocked cpu,i would set to atleast 1.3v or 1.315v,from what your describing of random shut offs/restarts it points to memory voltage or qpi/vtt not enough

                    Re: Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5 random reboots

From the GA-X58A-UD5 rev 1.0 specifications:
(Note 2) For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16_1 slot; if you are installing two PCI Express graphics cards, it is recommended that you install them in the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots.

(Note 3) The PCIEX8_1 and PCIEX8_2 slots share bandwidth with the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots respectively. When PCIEX8_1 is populated with an expansion card, the PCIEX16_1 slot will operate at up to x8 mode; when PCIEX8_2 is populated with an expansion card, the PC IEX16_2 slot will operate at up to x8 mode.
I don't think that installing your video card in the PCIEX16_2 slot will have any negative effects.

I'm not very familiar with BIOS and hardware. What I could gather from is that the DRAM voltage should be at 1.65V (or perhaps 1.6V?). I couldn't select 1.65V exactly, the closest was 1.66V and with that setting I got an error in POST. The error said that the system had problems booting due to overclocking, which made me reset it back to auto. 1.66V and upwards are also colored in pink up to 1.88V where it becomes flashing red. Qti/Vtt is 1.3V, 1.32V, 1.34V and so forth.

While looking through BIOS I also noticed that System Memory Multiplier (SPD) is set to auto and that the Memory Frequency is at 1066. Should I change this setting to 10.0 so that it's at 1333Mhz?

what speed is your ram? 1333mhz or 1600mhz? yes that what spd memory multiplier is for set it to give you your rams rated speed,1.6v will be ok for dram and 1.3v is ok for qpi/vtt voltage

According to the OCZ link I posted in the previous post they're at 1333MHz. I'll make the adjustments and see how my system runs. If 1.6V for DRAM doesn't work, is it safe to try 1.66V despite it being written in pink?

Yes its fine,1.66v is 1.648v in windows, you might not need that much for 1333mhz,if its 1600mhz then you will,I ran a 920 and same board as you with those voltages for 3years just fine

                              Re: Gigabyte GA-X58-UD5 random reboots

Unfortunately with the new settings I set in BIOS, my system started freezing in Windows. It froze while loading windows, on the login screen and sometimes a couple of minutes after logging in. After freezing three times in a row on the login screen I reset the settings (DRAM Voltage, QPI/Vtt Voltage, System Memory Multiplier) back to Auto. Now it's randomly rebooting again. I'm unable to find any pattern to it, and WhoCrashed says "No valid crash dumps have been found on your computer".

I'm also noticing some sort of static noise in the area near the CPU. I cannot pinpoint the source exactly, but I think it might be similar as to what [GUIDE] Retail OS X Install (10.5.8) on Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 (Core i7) Mobo - Tutorials (The Genius Bar) - InsanelyMac Forum this guy points out at the end, however I can't see any specific pattern to that either. It doesn't seem to be related to mouse scrolling or hdd load in my case.

While writing this post, my system has rebooted twice from the log in screen. :(
