  • GA-Z97-D3H bios can't "see" Samsung XP941 in M.2 socket

New build of a GA-Z97-D3H using a Samsung XP941 SSD (part number MZHPU128HCGM-00004) in the M.2 slot. Cannot see drive in BIOS though Windows 7 installer does see it but will not allow installation even after loading the latest Intel SATA RAID/AHCI driver from the Gigabyte site via the Win installer "load driver" function. Have tried numerous BIOS setting combinations with no luck. Have tried booting with Active@Boot and creating partition on drive (both MBR and GPT) setting drive as "active", etc. Gigabyte M.2 Qualified Vendor's List includes my Samsung part number and many other Z97 chipsets (ASUS and ASRock) are reporting success with this combination. Has anybody got this working on a Gigabyte Z97 board?

Have not tried F7- just noticed it today on the Gigabyte site with the description "Improve Intel K-sku CPU performance" Wasn't too excited when I read that description as it didn't appear to address my particular issue but I will give it a try this evening. Running F6 at the moment.

Flashed latest F7 bios dated 06/19/2014- no change in results. Windows installer still sees the drive but reports it as read only. DISKPART reports that READONLY = no, partition is active, BOOT DISK = no.

I would try emailing gigabyte or raise a ticket and link them to this thread/explaining what problems your having

id put it down to a bios bug or poor support

I raised a ticket on 07/04/2014, first response was 07/08/2014. First response was "...shouldn't be any issue..." and "make sure the module is fully seated". Thanks!! I agree there shouldn't be any issue considering the fact that I am using hardware from your supported/approved list! I purchased four of these boards- based on my experience so far most likely my last Gigabyte purchase!!

                  AnandTech | ASRock Z97 Extreme6 Review: Ultra M.2 x4 Tested With XP941

                  OS Installation
A topic that has arisen on forums since the launch is whether the M.2 drives can be used as boot drives. For UEFI installation, the detection algorithm in the firmware has to be active to see the drive at the install prompt, however for Legacy installation the drive needs to implement its own firmware at POST. As the XP941 does not have initialization drivers, my Legacy Windows 7 install that I normally do for reviews, while it saw the drive at the OS installation screen, it was unable to hook the drive in to install. This is for both the M.2 x2 and M.2 x4 slots on the ASRock motherboard. Placing the drive into an ASUS motherboard showed no drive at all for Legacy installation, however Kristian has been in contact and confirmed that they are working on enabling UEFI installation for M.2 in a future BIOS update, as should all the manufacturers be if they have not already.
When the motherboard manufacturers have updated UEFIs, the following table should be relevant:
Legacy OS Install UEFI OS Install
                  M.2 without M.2 POST Firmware
                  (e.g. Samsung XP941)
                  No Yes
                  M.2 with M.2 POST Firmware

Just to update and respond to recent posts- I have tried two motherboards of the four I have and two XP941 drives. All parts behave the same. I too am perplexed as to why other Z97 boards seem to have this figured out but Gigabyte cannot. Waiting for latest response from Gigabyte...

Stay on them...they should already have the bios ready by now since the boards are out. I love Gigabyte boards but when it comes to bios...well I wish they would hire some more people.

That's a shame, I wonder if they (support) don't understand the issue, or do but don't want to admit it exists.

My understanding of the situation is the XP941 requires the EFI SATA option ROM (provided by Intel for Intel boards) which is part of the BIOS/UEFI file. The legacy SATA option ROM (also part of the BIOS/UEFI file) will not allow the XP941 to boot an OS. That is at least one reason Samsung did not sell the XP941 at retail in the past, it was only available to manufactures building AIO PCs (mainly if not only laptops), so they could be sure those PCs were configured correctly.

The UEFI booting compatibility information from the Anandtech review confirms this, since that type of installation will use the EFI SATA option ROM.

The CSM option in the BIOS/UEFI controls legacy or UEFI booting (enabled = Legacy booting), and many boards have sub-options when CSM is enabled that allow you to select/use the EFI SATA option ROM. At least some ASRock boards have had that option since Z77 boards were introduced, and I use(d) UEFI booting Windows 7 and 8 installations on ASRock Z77, Z87, and Z97 boards.

Check if your BIOS/UEFI has the CSM option (I can't imagine it won't...) and if so when set to Enabled (default) check if you have the option to choose the EFI SATA/storage option ROM. That should (in theory) allow you to boot an OS from the XP941. That of course assumes that the EFI OROM exists in the BIOS/UEFI file.

The Gigabyte BIOS menu does have a CSM setting but it is only revealed after selecting "Windows 8" under the "Windows 8 Features" setting. I have tried that but the Windows 7 installer will not even start with this setting. With the "Windows 8" setting selected a "CSM Support" setting is revealed with "Always" and "Never" as the choices. There is also a "Boot Mode Selection" setting with "UEFI and Legacy", "Legacy Only", and "UEFI only" as the choices. With the "Windows 8 Features" set to "Other OS" (required for anything other than Windows 8) there is a setting for "Other PCI Device ROM Priority" with "UEFI OpROM" and "Legacy OpROM" as the choices. I have tried both with no luck.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has taken an interest in this thread- this has been a most frustrating build and it really helps to know there are others out there trying to help solve this.
