  • Can't get power to system 1/20 times

    Hi all,
I've been having an issue with a fairly new build for the past couple of weeks. The Psu is making a slight clicking noise.

    BUILD:
    i5-4670k
    GA-H87N-Wifi
    16GB Kingston Hyper Ram
    Corsair 650W Modular PSU
    Integrated GPU

When we first set it up it was working no problem. A week down the line it won't turn on. I checked, all connections are stable. So here's what I did.
Only time we could get it to work was when we hit the PSU switch on and off until it would eventually work, then we just avoided turning it off.

    1. Try different power cable for PSU.

    2. Try a different PSU (Same exact PSU model, same exact clicking noise.)

    3. Try both PSUs in another system (Booted up fine)

    4. Plugged another system's Case Power Switch into the board, still no luck.

    5. RMA'd the Motherboard, Gigabyte says they have had no issues with any configurations and sent it back to me.

    6. Just tried setting it up without the CPU and RAM and just a fan to see if it will get power. No luck

So I'm lost here. This really baffles me and I don't know what else could be causing the issue.

I've recorded the clicking sound and here it is, it is a very quiet click you have to be next to it with your ear up.

    Any advice here?

    Thanks in advance

    UPDATE:

Just tested the clicking PSU on another system, works fine and no clicking. It has to be the board.

What "Same exact PSU model' is it you're using there?
#1 - Please, when seeking help, enter the make and model of ALL parts that your system is comprised of in your Signature, or at least the model #'s in your System Specs, then "Save' it.
____If you are overclocking, underclocking, or undervolting any parts, informing us of this and their values would prove beneficial in helping you.

#2 - Consider your PSU to be the foundation from which all else is built upon. Anything built upon a weak foundation is poorly built.

The clicking sound could be from the fan in the PSU, and is caused by the mounting of the PSU in your PC case, or simply fan noise at a certain RPM. What case are you using, and is it a top or bottom PSU style case?

You can test turning the Corsair (or any) PSU on by first disconnecting the wires from the case's power switch to the header on the mother board. Next use a small screwdriver and short circuit the two pins that the case power switch is connected to. That should start the PSU and PC.

If that test consistently works, then it is the case power switch or wires/connectors that are the problem.

Do the pins for the mother board header seem sturdy and solid, not loose?

Any chance you can try a different make and model PSU with your board and case, and see how that goes? What model Corsair PSU have you been using?

        What parsec said.
And if you want to back up a little more, disconnect everything from the psu but the 24 pin, but leave it disconnected at the motherboard and short pin #16 and the black ground wire next to it and the psu should kick on. If not then either the 24 pin or psu is fubar.
