I have used XP with absolute trouble free success since early December. My modem is configured so that it is silent on connection and it too has worked perfectly since installation. All of a sudden the modem keeps telling me that "the line is busy" and it redials and redials and redials... If I turn the sound back on (and I found this out by accident) the modem connects immediately. Now heres the rub... I dual boot with Me and the modem setup is exactly the same and it connects without any problem, silent and all! Any suggestions will be appreciated.

what sort of modem, which drivers are you useing (manufacturers/ native)

The modem is a Taicom MR56SVS and this is where it gets confusing. In Me I use the supplied drivers and it works perfectly.
In XP I use the native drivers and the native Standard 56k modem because for some reason XP will not recognise the Taicom drivers. If I boot up with the modem switched off and then turn it on to go online all is well except for the fact that the modem finds an engaged signal if I turn the sound off. If I leave the modem on and then boot up XP finds "new hardware" and installs the previously installed Taicom drivers. I now have two modems. If I connect using the "new hardware" I can connect successfully providing I don't turn the sound off.
This is thebest bit though... If I shut down completely and then reboot with the modem turned off and then check the system properties I only have one "Standard 56K" modem the Taicom modem has disappeared!
It would make you cry considering that last night everything worked perfectly and I have not done a thing to the PC.

ok the first thing to note is that XP/2k checks everytime it boots to see if the modem is there - so what i'd do is boot with the modem on, let it find it & install it and then remove the standard 56k modem.
then try changing the settings on the detected modem - not the manually installed one
(if you can't be bothered rebooting just refresh the device list)

Kheldar... many thanks for your suggestions. I spent many a happy hour today fiddling around but to no avail. However I got to thinking that the only thing I had done in between times was to move the PC to another location and the connection to the modem is no longer shared with the telephone. In the properties for the modem I found a box marked 'Wait for DialTone', I unchecked that and it seems to have cured the problem. I have had two successful 'silent' dialups since doing that. Actually if the truth be known it wasn't the noise that worried me it was what had gone wrong while I wasn't looking [lol]
Once again I thank you for your help.
