  • Best Security Camera Video capture card for Z77 Pro4-M

    Newbie Alert!
    Don't know what I don't know!
    Learning on the run...

    That said...
I want to get a 720p or 1080p (1000 TVL minimum) external security camera. I want to connect it to my PC and use some video editing software to capture and record the video. I have tried an external USB dongle but it is limited to 720x480 pixels regardless of the camera rating.
    Make sense so far?

I have the Z77 Pro4-M motherboard with a few slots open.
    http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%2...Specifications
    What are these slots?
    PCI?
    PCI EXPRESS?

Can any of you recommend what kind of video capture card I should get?
    One camera only.
    Simplest is best.

    Welcome to the forum.

You can learn almost anything you want by learning how to do intelligent web searches.
Searching for: what is pci and pci express will quickly teach you about the features, functions, limitations and differences that PCI and PCI-e slots provide. You will possibly end up buying and installing a video capture card that installs in one of your computer's available PCI-E slots, unless of course you decide to go with a NAS (Network Attached Storage) setup that could be networked with your computer.

Several other web searches you can and should do include:
    • home surveillance video faq guide tutorial
    • high resolution video surveillance camera
    • home video surveillance dvr hard drives
    • home surveillance video camera storage hardware options
    • home surveillance forum website

We can assist you with computer hardware and software advice, but you will need to zero in on the hardware and software that you will need.

I'm a newbie when it comes to surveillance system setup and operation so I can't give you any specific advice relating to surveillance hardware or software. I think that the least expensive way to start out might be to buy a dedicated surveillance storage hard drive and installing one or more of these multi-terabyte drives in your system. I don't know what the prices are for Digital Video Recorders.
