  • Asrock Extreme 6 not detecting Samsung XP941 in 4x M.2 slot

    Hi.

Last week I bought the Extreme 6 so I could run my Samsung XP941 via the M.2 Turbo (4x) interface.

I couldn't get it to show up initially at all, so moved it to the 2x interface and it showed up okay.
I then moved it back to the 4 x, and it then showed up okay.
I booted from my USB stick and installed Win8.1 64-bit. Rebooted a few times without issue.
Powered the machine off once all updated, etc.

I powered it on again today, and voila... the Samsung drive is no longer there. I thought it might be because I had a GTX580 card in the 1st PCI-e slot, so removed that and used the onboard gpu, but still no Samsung drive showing.

I have 2 x Hitachi 3Tb drives attached to the pair of sata ports that are 2nd from the top (can't recall their numbers)

Hoping this is simple to resolve. I've also tried the suggestion of enabling the UEFI only boot option mentioned in the Maverick thread here - no change.

Re: Asrock Extreme 6 not detecting Samsung XP941 in 4x M.2 slot

I think at least in the short-term, I'll try the XP941 in the slower M.2 slot and see how that goes. If nothing else, it will at least rule out any possible problems with the drive itself.

===== Update - changed it to the slower M.2 slot.... finds and boots into Windows perfectly.

Now to get it doing that is the faster slot... anyone?

Here is an Atto s/s from the 2x slot...
    <a href="http://s70.photobucket.com/user/nzfritzman/media/XP941Attoin2xslot_zps1da23c5f.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/nzfritzman/XP941Attoin2xslot_zps1da23c5f.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo XP941Attoin2xslot_zps1da23c5f.jpg"/></a>

and the great news is that it starts up every time.

Now if we can get that happening with the extra bandwidth of the 4x slot.

Update... The tech team @ ASROCK have managed to replicate this exact issue with their Extreme 6 boards and the same M.2 card (WHEW!).

Seems that it is definitely linked to powering off the system.

They are working on a fix.

Re: Asrock Extreme 6 not detecting Samsung XP941 in 4x M.2 slot

Strange, the XP941 SSD has been reviewed on quite a few PC hardware review sites, all of which used the Z97 Extreme 6 board. At that time, it was the only board with the Ultra M.2 interface. None of those reviews ever mentioned a problem like this, but were not using the standard M.2 port.

The XP941 is not officially sold at retail by Samsung in the USA, since it is not a simple plug and play SSD. It requires a specific SATA option ROM for use as an OS drive in the M.2 slot.

Newegg has the 256GB version in stock again, but is sold in the OEM non-retail packaging. The XP941 is not listed among Samsung's SSDs on their website, the only info about it is the press release about how it is available to laptop PC manufactures.

          Update...

Replaced the board under RMA today... the XP941 showed up immediately and I'll update again after the weekend, but looking good so far.

Have a different issue now though... despite being in the TURBO M.2 slot, the performance has dropped from this (the old board)

          <a href="http://s70.photobucket.com/user/nzfritzman/media/Atto-updated_zps5d6f2943.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/nzfritzman/Atto-updated_zps5d6f2943.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo Atto-updated_zps5d6f2943.jpg"/></a>

down to this (with the new board)

          <a href="http://s70.photobucket.com/user/nzfritzman/media/AttoXP941newboard_zps69714011.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/nzfritzman/AttoXP941newboard_zps69714011.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo AttoXP941newboard_zps69714011.jpg"/></a>

Feeling a bit miffed about the significant drop in performance and hope we can sort that aspect out. Updated the BIOS to 1.40 but no change.

Re: Asrock Extreme 6 not detecting Samsung XP941 in 4x M.2 slot

That benchmark looks like you aren't getting four PCIe 3.0 lanes. The performance wall at a bit over 1000MB/s is the clue.

These Haswell processors only have 16 PCIe 3.0 lanes available, so once a video card is used in a PCIe x 16 slot, what the behavior of the Ultra M.2 slot becomes, I don't know. Is your video card running at x8 now?

Re: Asrock Extreme 6 not detecting Samsung XP941 in 4x M.2 slot

Sorry mate... missed your reply, but I've actually taken the graphics card out and use the onboard as it's adequate for my use.
I have gotten completely used to the 1000 Mb / Sec performance and haven't checked further to see if it's normal or not... I wondered whether that's actually a screenshot of my OCZ Revo3X2, which as I recall used to run at around that speed. (Maybe someone can clarify what the XP941 is meant to max out at i a 4x slot?)
I'm thinking I'll grab one of the new Samsung SM951 512GB anyways, as they seem to be doing around 2000 Mb / Sec, and are only slightly more expensive than what I have.
My XP941 will be up for sale soon!
