  • Back to Overclock - Opinions needed

    <article>
Unfortunately has been few years with no PC rig since I started working and carry notebook wherever I go. But I do remember the good old days where It was great to tweak the rig and squezze every Mhz our of every component. Unfortunately its not that much fun with a notebook :P

I have most of my components selected :

    MSI Z97 MPOWER Max AC
    IntelCore i7-4790K
    Cooler Master V8 GTS
    Corsair HX 1050
    980 AMP!
    G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB)
    SSDOCZ VERTEX 460A 480GB
    Seagate Barracuda 2 TB

But Im wondering if this a good selection of motherboard / PSU / Memory

What do you guys think, considering I didnt overclock for quite few years now. I want easy but rock stable motherboard overclock..

I would change couple of things on that config:

Mobo – if you really want overclock, perhaps you should look into ASrock Z97 OC Forumula
    CPU – Raw Powa!
CoolerMaster V8 – Again, for overclock I would go for Noctua nh-d15
Corsair HX 1050 – A bit overkill ... Do you need all that power?
    980 AMP! – Good stuff
    G.Skill – Approved
OCZ Vertex – Pretty good, but would go for their line of Vector 150 for a bit extra performance

I'd say good choice, but even consider ARC100 if you're leaning towards OCZ.

I think he should keep with the Vertex, ARC is a good SSD but Vertex has more performance. By the look of his system specs looks like he's not trying to go on a budget

You're right...I just checked with a few friends, the Vertex is higher performance (a bit more expensive) and has higher specs than ARC 100.

The power you can consider V1000 from Coolermaster and motherboard go with the Asrock Z97 OC forumula.

Whatever board/CPU and memory you buy, be sure they are compatible. You just can't randomly select some DDR3 memory and assume it will work with your CPU and board. Check the memory manufacture and the boards memory compatibility list to be sure.

Jumping back into over clocking with a Haswell processor will be a shock, the longer you've been away from over clocking Intel processors, the more shocking it will be. Things have changed, a lot.

While the board you use does matter, the two main things that will affect your OC are the so called "Silicon Lottery", and how good your CPU cooler is. You cannot get enough cooling capability when over clocking a Haswell processor.

Already have it, Corsair Graphite Series 600T Arctic White Steel... Such nice case! Amazing finish, great quality of materials!
                    Pretty impressed by Corsair here.

Good choice on the case! BTW, just saw on Tom's about some overclocker pushing 4790k with this mobo to 7003.38 MHz! That's your number to beat

Core i7-4790K Overclocked to 7003.38 MHz on ASRock Z97 OC Formula
