  • Abnormally high PCH temp Gigabyte z97+4670k

    Hello guys,

First post here. So sorry for any mistake. I have tried to google my problems but did not yield any success.

Anyway, I have a Gigabyte z97 mobo + intel 4670k OC'ed @4.2 Ghz and 1.25 vcore. When I overclocked the cpu the multiplier and the vcore are the only options I changed, nothing else.
My machine works as intended, gaming and other tasks are absolutely fine.

However I sometimes notice that the PCH temp is very, very high, in the screenshot below it is at 125 Celsius degree, but I have seen another instance when it shot up to 169 degree.

Personally I suspect fault reading but there might be other problems. Any ideas and thoughts?

    Thanks all.

What Stasio said......the PCH runs cooler on Z97 than previous platform, so I believe it's a bad readout from that sensor.

Re: Abnormally high PCH temp Gigabyte z97+4670k

No chance that temperature reading for the PCH is correct. The rated TDP for the Z97 is 4.1W.

Intel chipsets can operate at higher temperatures than their processors can, their max Tjunction temperature is ~100C. Just like Intel processors, the PCH would shutdown if it was to hot.

There are few if any standards for sensor chip outputs, and boards use different sensor chips and use them differently. Notice that almost all the HWMonitor voltage readings are very wrong, your PC would not be running if the 3.3V rail on your PSU was at 2V, or the 5V rail was at 3.4V. Actually the labels for those readings are most likely what is wrong, since again there are no standards for what most sensor outputs correspond to.

Gigabyte SIV should display correct value.
