  • X99 OC Formula onboard USB 3.0 only functioning as USB 2.0 MTT Hub

    Hi Guys,

I am having trouble with USB 3.0 on my new X99 OC Formula motherboard.

Actually of the eight ports on the back panel (onboard), two operate as USB3.0 (correct), two more as USB2.0 (correct), and the remaining four as USB2.0 MTT (wrong..). The problem ports are the ones using the Intel USB3.0 eXtensible Controller. The ports are named USB3_1, USB3_2, USB3_3, USB3_4.

Diagnosis: I used to get the message "This Device Could Perform Faster" when I started Windows, so I used USBTreeView.exe and saw that some ports were operating as USB2.0 (see snapshot attached). The highlighted port/hub is the one giving me trouble.

Solutions: So far I have tried: a) going into UEFI and fiddling with the USB settings; b) Reinstalling the latest Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible drivers from the ASRock website.

Questions: Does anyone else have this issue with ASRock motherboards? Does anyone have a solution? Could it be that the motherboard is not getting enough power - on this motherboard there is an additional optional 4-pin power connector (ATX12V2) which I haven't connected?

    Ideas?? Thanks!

The ATX12V2 plug is for boards which don't have the 8-pin connector. As far as your USB problem is concerned, I don't have a clue, really. Sorry for stating the obvious, but keep in mind that you'll only get USB3 speeds when a USB3 device is connected...

So because you seem to have an issue with some USB 3.0 ports, it's all ASRock boards that have "this issue"? That is quite an over generalization.

Next, the X99 platform is very new and not many people own/use them yet. Expecting a flood of replies is not realistic, and assumes all owners have this problem. Anything is possible, but we haven't seen this in this forum.

Checking the specs of your board, we find this:

This tells us that the board's IO panel has four USB 3.0 ports provided by the ASMedia ASM1074 hub. While this hub is not a USB 3.0 chip supplying ports, it does act as a hub for some of the Intel USB 3.0 port connections. I don't see a driver download for this hub chip, so that is not the issue.

Your board has two USB 2.0 connectors on the board for connection to a PC case's USB 2.0 ports, or a USB port adapter that mounts in a PCI slot in a PC case. The specs state each of the USB 2.0 connections supports four ports. It looks like that is what is being displayed in that USB treeview software. Otherwise, where are the USB 2.0 ports being shown in that display, in one of the other two entries that are not expanded in treeview?

What does the Windows Device Manager display of the USB ports look like?

The USB 2.0 MTT Hub entry is unusual, I've never seen that terminology (MTT) used before. I didn't look it up, but I wonder if it is a treeview term.

MTT should stand for "Multi Transaction Translator", to avoid bottlenecks, I guess...

            MTT vs STT usb hubs:

            From USB hub - Wikipedia:

While high-speed hubs can communicate at all device speeds, low and full-speed traffic is combined and segregated from high-speed traffic through a transaction translator. Each transaction translator segregates lower speed traffic into its own pool, essentially creating a virtual full-speed bus. Some designs use a single transaction translator, while other designs have multiple translators. Having multiple translators is a significant benefit when one connects multiple high-bandwidth full-speed devices.
