  • Gigabyte EP45-DS3P + Xeon 5450 overclock help please

Hi, I'm new here and came across this site when searching for help. I'm an old man now and used to play around with this stuff many moons ago but my grey matter is dwindling and I would appreciate some help getting a reasonable overclock with my setup. I'm not looking for extreme, just a good bang for the buck so here goes.

Re: Gigabyte EP45-DS3P + Xeon 5450 overclock help please

Core temperatures for the IBT run?

    Begin with
    Code:
    CPU Clock Ratio ---------------- : [7x]
     Fine CPU Clock Ratio ----------- : [0.5]

    CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) ------- : [400]

    System Memory Multiplier ------- : [2.0D]
This should result in 3GHz with 400Mhz FSB and ram at DDR-800 as it is now

If unstable, try increasing Vtt, 1.22-1.26v.
    Try 1.22-1.24v MCH Core.

If it seems stable increase CPU multiplier in 0.5 steps, add vcore if needed.
"Safe" upper limit for vcore is 1.35v, but watch temperatures, try to keep long run core temps under 72c

My old P45 board only needed 1.18v MC Core with 2x4GB memory so you may not need 1.2, but leave this like that for now.

Record IBT GFlops for stress level high with current settings, no other applications running except Core Temp minimized.
We will use GFlops to measure OC performance, they usually scale pretty good with OC %.
You can do the same with CINEBENCH(CPU test), MaxxMEM² - PreView and other benchmarking software eg

      @Headrush

      Welcome to the forum.

In the http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...overclock.html thread, Luke started out with his P35 system with 4GB of memory and later upgraded to an EP45-UD3P system with 8GB of memory. There's a lot of good information in Luke's thread but it is a very long thread with 653 posts in the thread.

Chike will do an excellent job helping you with your overclock.

Thanks for your reply Chike, I can see now how to post a code box :) I did have Core Temp running during the test, bottom right of my screenshot. Max temp was 53' on Cores 0 and 3. I will try your settings which make a lot of sense as the CPU and Memory will be 1:1 ratio although afaik my clock multiplier is locked but I will try it out now and get back. I was hoping to perhaps go a little faster with the RAM too but all in good time. I will run IBT with more extreme settings and check GFlops. I will also delve further into Lukes thread thanks...

Memory is not very important, negligible benefit compared to CPU clock.
Once you are set on CPU overclock we can see what can be done with memory.

BTW the higher bus speed already increased memory performance, compare MaxxMem results.

Re: Gigabyte EP45-DS3P + Xeon 5450 overclock help please

Not too successful I'm afraid. Although the BIOS allowed me to set CPU clock 7.5 as well as the other changes you suggested it would not post, just got a lot of beeping. When it did finally post I saw that CPU clock was back to 9x @ 400 giving me 3.6GHz. I tried to set 7.5 again but the same thing happened. So I thought to try 1.3v vcore, not sure what you meant by Vtt, I assume CPU Termination which I set to 1.26. I left MCH Core at 1.2 and tried again but still no joy.

Do you think my CPU clock is locked at 9x? I rather hoped cranking up vcore to 1.3v would of worked at 3.6GHz. Maybe I'm missing something somewhere.

Re: Gigabyte EP45-DS3P + Xeon 5450 overclock help please

It looks like Easy Tune6 (Intel), Version: B12.1122.1, Date 2012/11/22 is the latest version for the EP45 motherboards.

Go to GIGABYTE - Support - Utility - Motherboard to download the correct Intel version and follow the directions.

Ah that's better, CPU is recognised properly and Tuner/voltage is working. If I set 400x7.5 in EasyTune, will that effect my RAM speed because I have that set at 2.4 multiplier in BIOS, I'm not sure if I want the ram to jump to 960MHz just yet anyway..

EDIT: Ah ok I can set Memory speed in EasyTune on same tab, I will have a play and see, thanks..

Re: Gigabyte EP45-DS3P + Xeon 5450 overclock help please

                  You're welcome.

I never use EasyTune to change settings, I only use it to display the applied voltages in my screen-shots.
In the past, ET6 was sometimes buggy and could cause random problems at times when it was just sitting there.
I also make sure that ET6 will not auto start when I boot my system.

My preference is to make manual changes in the bios and use the saved bios profiles for my stable overclocks and the "testing" overclock settings.

Maybe the latest version is better, but I'm not willing to bet on it.
There's no right or wrong answer; different strokes for different folks.

                  **edit**
I think that Chike suggested that you use the 2.00D SMM (System Memory Multiplier) when the FSB is 400MHz or higher.
Memory tweaking will be applied once you've reach your optimal CPU speed.

At times setting the FSB to 400MHz caused problems for some.
Our former Gigabyte Guru (Lsdmeasap) suggested that you use 401 or 402MHz instead of 400MHz.

Follow Chike's advice with using the "correct" memory multiplier.

Did you begin with optimized defaults?
CPU and PCI Express clock drives should be 800mV IIRC.

                    Yes Vtt is CPU Terminations.

Did you set tRD (Static tRead Value) to 7? Sorry it slipped my eye.
Looks good reason for the beeps, set it 9 or 10, 8 may be possible but that's for later.

I did start with optimised defaults but made the changes recommended for overclocking by profJim in another post on this forum..

                        Code:
The following settings should be set after you have loaded Optimized settings:

                        Extreme Memory Profile ---- (X.M.P.) ---- : [Disabled] <--- Leave this Disabled

CPU Termination ---------- 1.200V* ----- : [Auto] <--- set to the value to the left (Auto over-volts this too much when overclocking) Auto is OK if not overclocking
CPU PLL ------------------ 1.500V* ----- : [Auto] <--- set to the value to the left (Auto over-volts this too much when overclocking) Auto is OK if not overclocking

                        MCH Core ---------------- 1.100V ------- : [Auto] <--- set to 1.20 for 2x2GB ram (1.24 - 1.26, or 1.05 might be needed)

Advanced Settings -------- The following settings will improve system stability for overclocked systems.
Limit CPUID Max. to 3 -------------------- : [Disabled]

Legacy USB Storage Detect --------------- : [Enabled] <--- set to Disabled when overclocking (this must be enabled to flash or boot from a USB drive)

These settings will eliminate many mobo problems unless there are hardware and/or cable connection problems.
I did set 2.00D SMM and EasyTune gives totally unpredictable results, atm I'm stuck at 7x cpu clock. Yes I manually set tRD at 7 as that was default auto setting also the clock drives were 700mv defaults. I will go back to Optimised Defaults for now and have another look at it tomorrow, my brain hurts :)

tRD 7 may be ok for DDR 800 CL 5 at 333MHz FSB but not for 400 FSB, with CL 4 it may have been.

One last thing before I go to bed.. Loading optimised defaults in the cpu tweak page of BIOS does not update everything, you have to open sub menus and optimise again, things changed, like the clock drives, more on that tomorrow, seems I need to start from scratch, goodnight chaps ;)

Loading optimized defaults shout set almost everything to auto, except few parameters like the clock drives and clock skews.
We ask then to set certain values to default manually as increasing FSB may cause auto to set them higher, and others just to make sure what is set as baseline, tweaks will be done later.
