  • Asus RT-N56U disconnecting every hour

I have this issue where my router restarts every hour. I have updated to the latest firmware manually. Any suggestions are appreciated. This is very annoying when streaming and or gaming especially.

Re: Asus RT-N56U disconnecting every hour

I am having a similar issue that I've not had before. Specifically with " ntp: start NTP update" and suspicious "miniupnpd[426]: Unknown udp packet received from 192.168.*.***:*****" log entries.

It may be related to WebHome < Main < NTP if your NTP host is set to pool.ntp.org. I've never set or changed the NTP server so I'm pretty sure pool.ntp.org is the default setting. Most of the time my log is flooded with kernel: DROP log entries preventing unauthorized connections, but the other day I noticed there were no kernel: DROP logs only kernel: ACCEPT logs making me think my router may have been compromised. I rebooted the router and it's back to kernel: DROP logs again so not sure what is going on.

NTP users are strongly urged to take immediate action to ensure that their NTP daemons are not susceptible to use in a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. Please also take this opportunity to defeat denial-of-service attacks by implementing ingress and Egress filtering through BCP38.

ntp-4.2.8p2, released on 7 April 2015, addresses two issues with crafted packets involving symmetric key encryption and Message Authentication Codes.

Re: Asus RT-N56U disconnecting every hour

My best SWAG is that the start NTP update entry has nothing to do with a router restarting and that this is only a notification log entry that the Network Time Protocol has updated the time.

For more information, search the web using these search terms:
        • how to set ntp on windows 7
        • set ntp server windows 7 command line

NTP updating every 3 seconds is excessive

I downloaded both of the Asus RT-N56U router user manuals and neither of them had any NTP information.

FWIW, my win7 sp1 system has a service called W32Time but this service is not running, probably because I only have a wi-fi connection.

        I hope that this helps.
