  • PC starts by turning off USB HD

    hi,

my PC shows a strange behavior. When i shut down windows (8.1) and after then i turn OFF my external HDD (via USB), the PC re-starts.

    What can i do?

Asrock Z97 Anniversary, latest Bios version.

Re: PC starts by turning off USB HD

You mean you plug out the USB cable and PC starts, yes?
Does it occur on all USB ports?
When PC is running, don't you have any problem connecting / disconnecting that cable? (something like hang or restart)

No, i turn off the USB HDD (it has a on/off switch) and then PC starts.

Other USB ports I have'nt tried yet.

When PC is running there are no problems.

I have read about the ErP/EuP option, it can be the cause:

But i can't find this setting in my Asrock Bios, altough my board has this function: "ErP/EuP ready (ErP/EuP ready power supply is required)"

Re: PC starts by turning off USB HD

Last night my PC started by itself...

EDIT: The cause of the automatic start was the "Adobe Flash Player PPAPI Notifier", a Windows schedule task.

          To the other problem:

If I were you I would try with a different PSU to check if it continues doing that. Power problems may bring this kind of things.

Hold the power button a few seconds and force the computer turn off. This guarantees shutdown in S5 mode. Then see if still can your external drive turn-on the computer or not.

Re: PC starts by turning off USB HD

Edit: when i am in Windows and hold the power button instead of shutting down via windows (right click start menu), the pc DOESN'T restart when switching off a usb drive! Very nice, thank you.

But what is the different of these two shutdown methods and can you say why "Shutdown" in Windows obviously brings the pc not in S5 mode?

Re: PC starts by turning off USB HD

Windows 8's shutdown is not shutdown! It is a type of deep sleep!
Read this page and it may guide you tune your windows to do a real shutdown:

Re: PC starts by turning off USB HD

"Fast startup" is the first thing i disable when installing windows 8...

                        But i've found the culprit.

I have a USB hub. When i unplug this USB hub the PC no longer restart when switching off USB HDD. It does NOT matter if the HDD is connected via the hub or direct in the mainboard.

Ok, thanks but what does Deep Sleep->Enabled in S4-S5 exactly do?
