  • Cannot install win 10

I've got Win 7.1 and 8.1 installed and running using a S series P35C-DS3R whitch is running an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600. It runs OK and I’m trying to install Win10 upgrade and am shot down and a message saying it needs NX or XD settings on in the BIOS.
I take too many stupid pills and can’t find the security portion where they are supposed to be.
Please help an old man! TYIA

      +1^^

      From TechArp.com:

      XD Technology

      Common Options : Enabled, Disabled

      Quick Review

This BIOS feature is actually a toggle for the processor's Execute Disable Bit feature. In fact, the acronym XD is short for Execute Disable and is specific to Intel's implementation. AMD's implementation is called NX, short for No Execute.

When enabled, the processor prevents the execution of code in data-only memory pages. This provides some protection against buffer overflow attacks.

When disabled, the processor will not restrict code execution in any memory area. This makes the processor more vulnerable to buffer overflow attacks.

It is highly recommended that you enable this BIOS feature for increased protection against buffer overflow attacks.

However, please note that the Execute Disable Bit feature is a hardware feature present only in newer Intel processors. If your processor does not support Execute Disable Bit, then this BIOS feature will have no effect.

In addition, you must use an operating system that supports the Execute Disable Bit feature. Currently, that includes the following operating systems :
      • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1
      • Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2
      • Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
      • SUSE Linux 9.2
      • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 3

Incidentally, some applications and device drivers attempt to execute code from the kernel stack for improved performance. This will cause a page-fault error if Execute Disable Bit is enabled. In such cases, you will need to disable this BIOS feature.

        Re: Cannot install win 10

Thanks for the info even if it’s not good. Though I’d like to try 10 it’s not cost justifiable to go to the expense of replacing so much HW. Win.7 suites me fine for my useage.

Boy do I have a lot of trouble with this site being so slow. Very difficult typing this response as it just stops showing typed characters and extremely slow scrolling.

          Re: Cannot install win 10

With my P35 and P45 Gigabyte boards, I've been running with the Execute Disable bios setting set to enabled with win2k and win7.

My EP45-UD3P did fine with the microsoft win 10 compatibility checker where there will be a few issues with some of my installed software.

As soon as I have time to reassemble my Q9650 - P35-DS4 system, I plan to try installing win 10TP onto an empty ssd boot drive.

I'll PM the forum administrator and tell him about your poor forum performance.

What expense? The CPU supports XD, did you check BIOS?
