  • "Cheap" 4K Rig

Hi guys, recently I became quite interested in 4K gaming and I'm thinking of getting Asus PB287Q monitor, I know gaming at this resolution is very GPU demanding so I'm trying to build a rig that wont cost a fortune but is still capable of pushing that 30-45fps. After reading this test AMD FX-8350 powering GTX 780 SLI vs GTX 980 SLI at 4K - TweakTown's Tweakipedia I thought of getting those components
Corsair 300R Black Mid Tower Gaming Case
    1000W Corsair RM1000x Series, 80 PLUS Gold
    Asus Sabertooth AMD 990FX
    AMD FX 8350 Black Edition
Corsair Hydro Series H80i GT 120mm High Performance Multi CPU Liquid Cooler
    16GB Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Pro Series 1866
    2X 8GB Gigabyte Radeon R9 390 G1 GAMING or 2X 8GB MSI Radeon R9 390X GAMING Twin Frozr V

Whats your thoughts guys? I know Inter is better but from what I read CPU isnt as important when gamoing at 4K and I would overclock that CPU. Thanks

You should not be buying AMD CPUs now since they have no viable upgrade path (the best you could swap an 8350 out for is a 9590).

The build you assembled there is nearly $1300 if you use the R9 390s instead of the 390X's. With a 390X Crossfire, you're looking at just over $1500. For about $100 more, you can get an X99 system with an i7-5820K and dual R9 390X's (or GTX 980s if you prefer). You will have a much better upgrade path (there is a 10-core CPU as well as several 8-core CPUs coming down the line for X99) and will have significantly better CPU performance. You could easily hit 4.2GHz on all cores with that CPU cooler (I was able to do that with a Dark Rock Pro 3 - in fact I could run stable at 4.4, but it ran a little too warm for my liking).

    Intel Core i7-5820K, Sapphire Radeon R9 390X (2-Way CrossFire), Corsair 300R - System Build - PCPartPicker

(I did not include storage because you didn't include it in your build.)
