  • Cold double post on Z77X-UD5H

    Hello,

this is my first post on the forum.

I have a slight problem with my motherboard and RAM. Few years ago I built my system using 4x4GB G.Skill Ripjaws. Last week they gave me errors, so I sent them for RMA. Tired of waiting, I bought another RAM kit from Corsair, 2x8GB LP Red.

The new kit passed memtest and I can work in Windows normally. However, every 13 cold boots or so, there's one cold double boot. As I turned on power, the mobo starts working then suddenly stop before post. Few seconds later, it runs again into post and enters Windows normally.

I already tried clearing CMOS, load optimized default, turn on XMP, but the symptom persist.

Do you have any suggestion regarding this matter? If I should update the BIOS, which version is the safest?

    here's my spec:
    i7 3770K
    Z77X-UD5H (rev 1.0) BIOS F14
    previous RAM:
    Ripjaws -F3-12800CL9Q-16GBRL - G.SKILL DDR3 Memory

    current RAM:
    Vengeance® Low Profile ? 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Kit (CML16GX3M2A1600C10R)

    GTX 680 Windforce OC
    Seasonic 860w Platinum
    Samsung 850 Pro 512GB
    Toshiba 3TB HDD
    Noctua NH-D14

    everything runs on stock

    edit:
I'm currently trying F15q. Strange that the HDD light is constantly on a few minutes after I leave my PC unatended, and off when I move the mouse.

It might help you to reflash the BIOS, one thing I've found with all my Gigabyte boards is getting a corrupt BIOS isn't too uncommon.
As to what version, try anything from F14 and up...I think our Z77X-UD5H is still rocking F16 (it's now my wife's machine, I don't look at it much since it's usually problem free) But some BIOS versions may be better for your particular RAM, I don't know. Ours is running Kingston 2x4GB HyperX with no problems . HyperX T1 Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model KHX1600C9D3T1K2/8GX - Newegg.com

It occurred to me you might try running your RAM at defaults (not XMP) and see what happens. Some Ram kits/mobo combos take some tuning.

I assume the F16 BIOS' already have the USB hub working at post? I'm still running F15q at the moment of this writing. So far no double cold boot, so I'm quite relieved.

Well, before I flashed the BIOS to F15q, I already tried what you said, even manually changed the timing according to the spec, but no avail.

You mean the USB 3.0? No problems with ours. I don't recall ever having any USB problems with the Z77x-UD5H, but it's been running stable for a long time so I don't remember all the nuances.
My wife uses it every day, I passed it on to her when I upgraded to Z87/Z97/Z170, she's always been happy with it and told me to leave it alone. lol.

Oh, I meant the entire USB hubs (I only tried 2.0 at that time) connected to the front panel. Few weeks before, I flashed the board with F15o for entirely different purpose (back then I often got BSOD, thought my SSD wasn't compatible.. apparently it was the RAM). When I tried flashing back to F14, the front USB panel won't recognize my thumb drive. Had to stick it directly behind the case, LOL. I read somewhere that the F15 series BIOSes had this kind of problem.

Haha... I'm glad that your wife is fond on the board. It is a good board indeed.

              Yes it is.
I don't remember any specific problems with front panel USB at all, although I do vaguely remember some type of brief USB issues back then, could have been driver related IDK. You could look through past posts here, I'm pretty sure there was a thread dedicated to Z77, or you can look over here:
