  • x5450 on ep43-s3l overclock help

Hello, im new here and i have a question about overclocking my x5450 on ep43-s3l, i managed to clock it to 3.9 GHz with 1.293 vcore. When i put the settings in bios for fsb and vcore and after i save it the computers beeps once and windows starts up, i do a prime95 test and it goes well, my temps are like 64-65 C with prime95. After i finish testing i restart the pc manually from the windows button and then Restart button, when windows log off and its time for the bios POST to come up, my computer restarts and the OC is on stock again. Here are some information and pictures.

Re: x5450 on ep43-s3l overclock help

      Welcome to the forum.

I'm impressed.....FSB = 434MHz and your system appears to be stable except when you reboot.

I see that you've already viewed the http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...-pls-help.html thread where we said that EP43 motherboards usually can't overclock with FSB higher than about 415 - 425MHz.

Change MCH Core voltage to 1.20 to see if this helps when rebooting.
When this setting is too high or too low if can often cause boot loops or the overclocked bios settings might reset.
We will cover testing with the 2.0B memory strap later.

I have several suggestions but first I need to see what Memset shows for your memory settings and also what ET6 (EasyTune 6) reports for your applied voltage settings.
      Download:
      Post a screenshot that includes:
      • Memset using the SPD and ">>" tabs
      • cpu-z CPU and Mainboard screens (several instances can be run at the same time)
      • EasyTune6 --> TUNER tab --> ADVANCE tab --> VOLTAGE tab (only the Voltage tab is needed)
      • CoreTemp screen [for your cpu's VID (Voltage ID)]

I only run ET6 to include the advanced voltage settings in a screenshot and I always close ET6 before I run any stress tests or intensive applications. I recommend that you don't enable ET6 to autostart with Windows.

Check out http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...overclock.html where Luke started with an P35-DS3L and later upgraded to an EP45-UD3P with 8GB of memory with his Xeon processors.

I do not have LLC (Load Line Calibration) enabled in my systems.

It's easier for us to review your bios settings when you select/highlight the bios template and click on the # button to wrap the settings in a code section.

      Code:
      Motherboard: Model: Rev#: Bios Version:
      Cpu: Model
Ram: Brand, Model/Part#, Link to your ram's specs
Power Supply Unit: Brand, Model#, Wattage

Default settings for new setups that are not overclocked.

note: replace all ?? with the value displayed in your bios.
----> Replace "Auto" with manually set values.

      Stress Testing
      • LinX or IBT (IntelBurnTest) CPU core temperatures will be about 10o(C) higher than Prime95 temperatures.
      • I like to run LinX as a preliminary stress test before I run and of the Prime95 tests where I run each Prime95 test (Blend, Small FFT or Large FFT) for at least 8 hours.
      • If LinX or IBT has errors, your system is not stable.
      • Many times LinX or IBT do not have errors but an extended Prime95 test can have errors, sometimes very quickly and often after 3 - 6 hours.
      • I never run LinX or IBT for longer than 15 - 25 minutes.

Re: x5450 on ep43-s3l overclock help

Thanks profJim for the replay. Changed the previous post with CODE wraped bios settings. Changing the bios information that u mentioned with ??? and the values.

Changed the MCH Core to 1.200 the system boot (as usual like before, we will see on next restart)

After installing ET6 i had to restart my pc and boom, the bios oc reseted again, boot loops.
Entered bios again and set the settings again, but now getting bios boot loops cant boot into windows without restarting the bios oc settings. I set 1.300 to vcore and the windows boot.

        Here are some screenshots:

I think i need to put a better thermal paste on my cpu and change the location on my PC, atm is in a hole, between my pc desk and another desk, with the air holes facing the wall. Also forgot to mention im using air cooling, gonna open the PC change thermal paste with the best i have DeepCool Z3 (Atm i have thermal paste for transistors, the white one) whole i wait for your replay. Also forgot to mention, when i finished all that screenshots and testing, i restarted the pc and OC bios reset again. Waiting for a replay. Gonna change those ??? and [Auto] setting in bios u mention above on my 2nd post on this thread.

Re: x5450 on ep43-s3l overclock help

STOP RIGHT NOW, CPU PLL = 1.75000V IS DANGEROUSLY HIGH!!!

Go into the bios immediately and manually set CPU PLL to 1.59 or lower, don't leave it set to AUTO with moderate or high overclocks.

I'll look at the rest of your post later today.

Read about saving and loading bios profiles in the bios section of your motherboard user manual so that it is quicker and easier for you to reload a saved bios profile and then make some minor changes before you save bios settings and exit the bios.

Manually set Static tRead Value to 10 for each memory channel.
Memset reports Performance Level (aka tRD or Static tRead Value) as zero and your memory performance is poor.
tRD = 10 is very conservative (and safe) and this will be tweaked later.

What is the highest FSB overclock where your system did not reset the bios when you shut down your system or did a warm boot?

Re: x5450 on ep43-s3l overclock help

In Luke's Xeon thread we found that keeping cpu core temperatures at a reasonable level was an ongoing challenge.

Using my Q9550 settings as an example, my Vcore is set to 1.39375, but when my system is loaded when stress testing, the Vcore averaged 1.284.

You need to lower your FSB and raise your Vcore to get your system stable.

PCI Express Frequency = 105 might be part of the problem too, set it to 101, the default setting is 100.

Some motherboard models respond well with PCI Express Frequency somewhat higher than 100 but I don't remember seeing this with Gigabyte LGA775 motherboards.

Learning how to save profiles, i will post the bios settings again when i save them to USB, and by the way i rise vcore and lowered FSB, when i post the bios settings i will tell u if the system is stable or not. Be right back.

The copy of the bios that you save to a disk or usb is meant to be reloaded if needed, such as if your saved bios profiles get corrupted or you accidentally overwrite a saved bios.

You can reuse any of the eight saved bios slots any time you press F11 by going down to a particular saved bios slot. I always change the saved bios name before I overwrite the previous bios settings saved in any slot. When I save a profile that might or might not be stable, I put a question mark after the profile name, and once it is fully stable, I remove the question mark from the end of the name.

I fill out and print a hard copy of each bios profile and add notes on each page that describes what worked and what failed. This is an excellent tool that helps you see at a glance what seemed to help and/or what made things worse.

From page 37 and page 38 in your motherboard user manual

This function allows you to save the current BIOS settings to a profile. You can create up to 8

F11 : Save CMOS to BIOS
This function allows you to save the current BIOS settings to a profile. You can create up to 8
profiles (Profile 1-8) and name each profile. First enter the profile name (to erase the default profile
name, use the SPACE key) and then press [Enter] to complete.

If your system becomes unstable and you have loaded the BIOS default settings, you can use this
function to load the BIOS settings from a profile created before, without the hassles of reconfiguring
the BIOS settings. First select the profile you wish to load, then press [Enter] to complete.
I figured it out, read my last post. Now im at stable 421 FSB at 3.70Ghz (412x9) PCI-E 101 and Vcore 1.25626V, all rest settings are the same exept the tRD (Static tRead Value at 10 as u said on both A and D channels).
This FSB and vcore are stable from the beginning, and the pci-e was on 100 before, i will get it back to 100 after i finish with this post, the system is stable with those settings, all i want is to hit higher, like 4.00Ghz if possible. I raise the vcore before to higher voltage and the fsb too, but no luck, i think there is something that is missing, like ram timings, ram voltage, and other voltages. But u know the best, waiting for your answer :D

Re: x5450 on ep43-s3l overclock help

I don't know what you mean by a stable setup.
How many different Prime95 tests did you run?
How long did you run each test?

I can't advise you unless you post a detailed screenshot and include an updated bios settings template.
It doesn't help if you say "I only changed the following settings".
Without visual proof, it's too easy to make mistakes if you only post an updated bios template.

In Lukes Xeon O/C thread, he switched to an EP45-UD3P motherboard with his X5460 cpu starting with post #383.

There is a lot of good information in Luke's thread, check it out.

For cpu speeds at or near 4.00GHz you will probably need to set CPU Vcore close to 1.40 volts .
I've found that when stress testing, HWiNFO will show Vcore close to 1.296 volts or possibly a bit higher while the tests are running.
Unless you have an excellent, higher end cpu cooler, cpu temperatures will be too high.

I just noticed that you are using two different memory modules:
                          • DIMM1: Patriot Memory PSD22G80026 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (6-6-6-18 @ 400 MHz)
                          • DIMM3: A-Data ELQVE1B1615ZG 2 GB DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM (5-5-5-18 @ 400 MHz)

Using mixed brands or models of memory often leads to stability problems, but sometimes a mismatched memory setup can be stable.

Dram Voltage = 2.00 might help

Higher CPU Termination (aka VTT) might help, but it's best to set VTT at least 0.05 volts lower than CPU Vcore.

MCH Clock Skew = 50 or 100 might help with higher FSB settings.

This is a list of the available memory straps and the memory multipliers that can be used with each memory strap.
With FSB at 400MHz or higher, you should use the B or D memory straps.
Memory performance will be slightly better with the B memory strap, but some users found it easier to use the D memory strap above 400MHz.

This is the bios setttings i have right now, and the Computer is stable, no boot bios loops restarts, i've used it whole day, surfing the internet, listening to music and playing League of Legends on max quality in the Video menu. Im using Air cooling on my PC, i have CM Hyper 212 Plus with dual fans on my CPU, using 120mm fan at front of my PC to get air into the case, using 90mm fan at the back to get the hot air from the PC out, using another 90mm fan from the side to get a fresh air inside (this fan is more for the GPU, to bring a fresh air to the GPU also for the whole PC, the gpu has x2 fans (idk if you need this info) and the PSU has one 120mm fan to get the hot air from the psu out also from the PC (the fan its faced down to the CPU and gettin the hot air out). Here are screenshots from a Standard and High IBT test and hwinfo temps (max temps).

                            Standard

                            Fans in my pc:

Also forgot to mention, both of the tests, hits the max temp value and never goes that high again, its like 2-4 temp lower then the max temps showed on the picture.

About the RAM, tell me which ram should i keep and which ram should i change, i can trade it with someone 2gb ddr2 800 for 2gb ddr2 800 but the timings to be the same on my pc.

Now lets start from the beginning, with this info i told ya just now tell me what to do in the bios and tell me about the RAM modules, which should i change and which should i keep.
I plan to buy 1066Mhz DDR2 Ram, but not sure when i will get them, with those i will be able to clock more i guess, and if im lucky to find a cheap p45 chipset mb i will buy that too, but my country is limited with items, no p45 mb's atm and ram on 1066 mhz, all i can think of its ebay.
I think i provided enough information, if u need more info about my computer specs, click under my forum name, i got them all there. I guess this info will be enough to start overclocking my machine and trying to get the highest clock with this specs. ( till i get my ram modules or if i get them at all ).
Thanks Jim you are the best!

Re: x5450 on ep43-s3l overclock help

Okay, i found a ddr2 800 2gb module, put it on 2nd slot and now i have 6gb of ram, the 1st and 2nd slot ram modules are the same, same timings and the rest, and the 3rd slot ram module is different, should i put the 2nd slot ram module to the 3rd one so they work better in dual channel and change the 3rd slot module to the 2nd slot and run the PC with 6GB of ram or should i just get the 3rd ram module with the different timings out of the pc and dont use it? Here is a cpu-z:

Here is passmark test on the memory.

                              4GB(same timings on slot 1 and slot 3) page1

                              4GB(same timings on slot 1 and slot 3) page2

Now i put the 3rd ram module i have but that one is a bit different from the two at slot 1 and 3. So i put this module at slot 2 and here are the passmark test on 6gb memory.

                              6gb memory test page 1

                              6gb memory test page 2

Seems like with 4gb x2 ram modules on slot 1 and 2 is faster then 6gb ram. Im gonna leave the 2nd slot opened till i get x2 2GB ram modules with same timings as the once on slot 1 and slot 3.
So now i need to start overclocking and see what happends with the 4gb i have with same timings.
If @profJim can help it will be good :)
                              Thanks!
