Sata3 HDD Performance

I ordered 3 Hitachi 500GB sata3 HDD's that will be used in raid5 on a LSI 9240-4i controller. Before they go on that controller I decided to try a drive on the Marvell 9182 controller and see how they pared with the older sata2 HDD's. From the first test a Sata3 HDD as a single drive offers very little increase over sata2 HDD's. The true test will come when I can test the Hitachi's in raid0 and 5. Those test will be done on the LSI9240-4i I will redo the single drive test at that time also but doubt we will see any difference.

So here is the Hitachi 500GB sata3 drive compaired to the Samsung 320GB sata2 drive.

the sata3 models usually have double the cache, which is very nice to have from time to time. Don't know if that's what causes the difference for you, else a normal sata3 hdd shouldn't really perform better then any sata2 (marginal at best, as also seen on your test) .. atleast as far as I know.

will try to bench my disks one of the days, see if its the same thing

Well I just flashed my bios with one that has had the Marvell rom updated and not looking so good. Ill have to do some more test and flash back to see if my speeds come back.

Leaving the last option unchecked shows better results vs old test had both boxes checked.

I was getting 150 read/write on Samsung f3 1tb,and around 140 read/write on f4 2tb,these newer sata3 drives are quicker same as the newer seagate 3tb drives but not by much,quickest if all though is the rise in prices !!!

Yeah I didn't think HDD's would be much faster if at all on Sata3. The Hitachi drive has 32MB cache and the Samsung drive has 16MB cache.

As for the SSD speeds after updating the marvel firmware, I re-entered my overclock settings and the speeds came right back. Just have to see which has more effect CPU overclock stock to 4.2ghz or raising PCI-e from 100-103.

just wondered if the figures for the hitachi were the same speeds on the intel sata2 ports?

I think I may have found out what the problem is. Looking around the controller is doing some background operations, when its done Ill do another test.
