Default RAID setup query, not levels

I'm trying to find out about RAID- in 1. can you put extra files/folders on just one disk- can one external HDD be turned off (I have two WD 750GB SATA HDDs with eSATA)- do they both have to be on to read the files recorded & if so how do you know if one disk has failed, on GA-EP45-UD3R can you setup disks you want to use, the raid level (0-10) ? or can you tell me links where I could find out, I've been fruitlessly Googling for hours but I obviously didn't know the right place to look.
    Thanks

They both have to be on for the RAID to work. If you only power one up, the RAID screen will say that the mirror is broken. Then you will have to rebuild the array through the RAID control screen.

To test if a RAID 1 is operational, you can unplug the SATA connector while the system is up and then check the properties (volume size) of the drive, then plug it back in, unplug the other, and check its size. They should be indentical. Unfortunately, after you do this and reboot, the RAID controller will see the array as having been broken and require you to rebuild it. Depending on its size, that could take 1hr+.

Never have set up an external RAID myself, but that is how it goes on an internal RAID on the Jmicron ports.

Thanks, grishkafool, that's really helped a lot. I laughed at the quote by Alex St. John.

Also the intel matrix storage software installed will tell you if ur RAID has fallen over.

Unless you aren't using them. I didn't need IMS when I figured out my "Installed VISTA and didn't install IATAENU88.exe, how do I RAID" work around using the Gports.

Way to necro a thread, Nimrod... teehee.

I use the IMS software version 8.8 and it seems ok. Does the trick. Just remember dont mess around overclocking while running a 1TB RAID 1. Cause when your system freezes or you have to restart its not fun waiting half the day for the RAID to re-varify and ****.
