    Question Radeon HD5770 on a 720W PSU

There's an article that states a Radeon HD5770 requires a 450 Watt power supply unit at minimum but that power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 36 Amps available on the +12 volts rails. What does it mean?

I have a Gigabyte 720W PSU. According to the box, the max. output current for DC output of 12V1, 12V2 & 12V3 is 18A each. Is that it? Could it be that my PSU is not good enough for HD5770?

I think you will be ok,esp with a 750w psu, they don't use much power anyway, have you plugged it in and tried it? The pc will just restart while playing games if the psu cant cope

Actually I was planning to get one as an upgrade to my current 9800GT card. I reading various reviews of HD5770 but one particular article mentioned Amps on the 12V rail when recommending PSU for HD5770. I thought it was just enough by just looking at the Wattage.

Try it,my psu is a very cheap one and runs it fine,if it runs your gt then it will the 5770 as they use less power

    So it's 18A + 18A + 18A = 54A

Anyway, I got a reply from Gigabyte. They said the Amps are irrelevant.

the total of the rails added together is not the total available

a 550/650w 80+ quality psu will run you fine

just make sure it is rated at 80+ or better

Never mind HD5770. New question: Is 720W enough for a non-overclocked Radeon HD6870? Or I need to upgrade to 800W/850W/1000W?
