    Default Fan Controller Limit

    Hello,

I have a significant lack of technical knowledge related to electricity.

I have 6 Panaflo fans model FBA12G12H that I've planned on attaching to a triple fan radiator:

    Input power 5.52 Watts
    Rated Voltage 12 V
    Hydrowave Bearings
    Air Flow 103.8 CFM
    Rated Speed 2850 RPM
    Noise 41.5 dB(A)

The fan controller I've salvaged from my old build is a Zalman model ZM-MFC1 Plus:

    Channels 6
    Maximum power 7.0W per channel
    Input voltage 12VDC
    Output voltage 5VDC - 11VDC 5%

I would like to attach 2 or even 3 fans to each channel leaving the other channels for other gear. Based on the specs I've found and provided above is it safe to do so? I'm unclear as to whether watts are cumulative and would therefore exceed the capacity of each channel.

    Thanks for your help,

    MJ

Sorry, your ZM-MFC1 controller can't handle more than 7 watts per channel ;(
Wattage is cumulative, so using only two of your fans (2 x 5.52 watts = 11.4 watts) will overload any fan channel on the controller when the fans are running at full speed. Your best bet is to check out fan controllers at Newegg.ca for units that can safely handle more watts per channel. Prices should be about $15 - $30 (Loonie $) for decent multi-channel fan controllers. I think that I've seen some fan controllers that handle up to 20 watts per channel.

I'm using 2 fans per channel with my ZM-MFC2 controller, but my fans are 1600 rpm, 63.7 CFM and each fan draws 0.2 amps (2.4 watts) max.
FYI; volts x amps = watts, so in my case, 12 volts x 0.2 amps = 2.4 watts for each fan.

Let us know which controller you end up with.

Thanks for responding to my post Jim. It's too bad as you pointed out that I can't run that controller as hoped but I appreciate you setting me straight on the matter. For some reason it dawned on me today that I should be considering how much a controller can take. I wanted to hang onto the Zalman because it matched a new Lian Li PC-A71F case I'm putting together well. The case is very conservative looking and the ZM-MFC1 fits those aesthetic needs. I've looked at a lot of controllers today anticipating that I might learn that my plan wouldn't work. The only controller I can find that comes close to what I desire in appearance and meets my needs as we've discussed previously is this:

Lamptron FC-8 30 Watts Per Channel 8 Channel Multi-Color Fan Controller - Black Products Model: FC-8-BK [FC-8-BK] : Performance-PCs.com, ... sleeve it and they will come

That said those white buttons really bug me. So I guess I can either get used to them or put a Panaflo fan into each of the 6 channels on my current controller. For the sake of saving money on this build I'll probably do the latter. Thanks again.

You're welcome, glad to help out.
It's best not to overload the fan controller, even if you have a fire suppression system inside your computer case
