No one AV is really the best but a lot depends on the user keepin' it updated and usin' plain common sence but I do use Grisoft's free AVG and have done so for a few years now. I'd also recommend usin' Ad-aware 6.0 as well {the free version again} to get rid of spyware.

Right now I think the best free Anti-Virus Suite is Avast! Home edition. Link: www.avast.com

Make sure you download the home edition, because then you just have to fill out some info (never got any other mail from them) and they send you a lifetime registration code. I find it alot more user friendly then AVG, and has alot of mroe advanced features such as Instant Messaging and P2P shield. Just make sure you turn off the standard shield (unless you're really paranoid) as it kills system performance.

Virus Encyclopedia-was there but they removed it cos of its ever increasing size. you can still access it on their site
    http://www.grisoft.cz/virbase/virbase.php
Log Viewer-What do you mean by that? AVG can maintain log file if said to do so but not by default. There is a detailed test results info available, if you meant that. Please explain what kind of Log File you are talking about.
Skin Support-AVG uses 500KB of my memory with its resident shield running so I can do away with skins any day ;)
Antivirus screen-saver-No idea what that is...
P2P and Instant Messaging Scanner-How does that help? Please explain.
I would love to switch to something better (may be Avast), if I get some good features over AVG

log viewer detects everything - error messages, virus detections, program alerts - basically it's more comprehensive than AVG.

lol - 500KB is not a lot of memory.

When Avast! screensaver starts it'll scan for viruses in the background (easy enough to understand).

P2P and Instant Messaging Scanner - if people send virus infected files over P2P or instant messenger (self explanatory really). If you don't want this then simply disable it.

AVG maintains quite good logs (if told do so). never tried Avast so can't say how comprehensive they are but AVG's logs currently work for me
yup 500KB is not lot of memory and that is what i wanted to point out. how much does Avast take up with this skin support?
Screensaver-thanx for telling me about that
P2P and Instant Messaging Scanner-resident shield of AVG handles all that quite well. i don't understand why is a different shield required in the first place.
