thanks asklepios, unfortunately event viewer appears to be blissfully ignorant of the whole affair.

however i have new evidence! on a hunch i went to the java download page and tried their "test your virtual machine" feature.
waddya know, IE simply quit when i clicked the link!
now im gonna try re-installing java, obviously, but i anticipate problems for obvious reasons so any advice would be appreciated.
i will post back after i try to download java in a minute.

is windows setup to install them automatically? if so then that's why you don't see them :)

actually the windows update i list in my sig are for various versions and sometimes they might not apply to your particular one. also, windows update scans your PC and shows tailor made results. the results might show more updates compared to what are mentioned in my sig or might be less.
so this is why i recommend going to Windows Update. at least the sig will put in a user's mind that he is needed to patch up things :)
