    Without having to buy Office 2003 or something? Or is there a trick to open it with wordpad or notepad?

    If you don't want to install a full suite just to view Excel files, Microsoft has viewers and converters for many of their product line. They tend to be small installs and allow you to view and print files.

    This is the one I use - view capabilities only;

    I know it works fine with Windows 98 & XP.
