    Default compressing files with Winrar

I'll admit I don't compress alot of big files, but how do people compress files that are over a Gigabyte in size to uder 1mb? I've recently seen this done before, but on my version of Winrar (ver 3.20) I'm pretty sure I don't have an option to compress files that much. When I compress a file its not that much smaller than what I started with. Is it something in a newer version or Winrar or am I just missing something?

1GB to 1Mb compression would be more than a bit extreme. You may want to have a look at 7zip,( http://www.7-zip.org/ )as it has what I understand to be very good compression ratios but you are not going to achive anywhere near the ratio that you seek. Have a look at the posted page for real ratio expectations.

1GB to 1MB? If that's even possible, it would be with a type of file specifically designed to be compressed. For example, if you had a 1GB text file filled enitrely with 7s, you could probably compress it even lower than 1MB.

As for realistic compressions, PrarieDawg has it right. 7Zip does have the best compression ratio out there, AFAIK. Winrar files are pretty good though, and most of the time it won't make a difference. I don't personally use 7Zip for that reason, but I would if Winrar weren't giving me satisfactory compression.

After posting this elsewhere I'm finding out that another program was involved in compressing the file I was talking about. Since its an image file, somehow you can blank out the files in the image so only the file structure is left, I guess.
