  • very SLOW hard drive under xp pro... heeelp

Please help… my ata100 hard drive slowed to ata66 speeds after

upgrading from XP home to XP pro! The drive is listed as dma

mode 5 in the drive properties, but I’m sure this isn’t true

because of the slow slooow performance I’m getting. Running

sisoft sandra confirmed this as the drive tested exactly on par

with an ata66 drive (I had typical ata100 test results in XP

home). I’ve installed the latest via drivers of course.. and i also

tried the older 4.38 4in1's but that didn’t fix it. Oh and this exact

same thing happened when I upgraded another, much newer

computer (with a via chipset) from XP home to XP pro. I don’t

    know what to do.

oh, and when i look at the 4in1 folder in the registry, it lists:

    "defoult"
    "4in1AGPfile"
    "4in1delfile"
    "4in1INFfile"
    "4in1path"
    "4in1version"
    "viamach"

is there suposed to be a "4in1IDEfile" in there? And, for the
4in1path, it says its in ..temp\pft5~tmp\ is this the correct directory?

    thanks

Go into the device manager and uninstall the IDE controller then reboot.

The only helpful advice I can give is in my VIA driver FAQ anyway, but obviously you have to check your cabling and make sure the settings in the BIOS are correct.

Aside from that, the only other thing is to run Cacheman (see my first XP Guide: http://www.tweaktown.com/document.ph...review&dId=324) and use all my recommended settings for your disk and file caches.
