Hi,

I'm wondering why I'm getting lackluster performance on 3D Mark 2001 SE when my 3D Mark 2003 scores seem ok?

P2.4C @ 2.7Ghz
Corsair XMS 1Gig Ram
MSI FX 5900 128Meg (OC'd to 427Mhz core & 919Mhz Memory)
Gigabyte 8KNXP mobo
Dual WD Raptor 10,000RPM 72Gig SATA Raid 0 (for OS)
Win XP Pro SP1

Current Scores:

3D Mark 2003 = 5790
3D Mark 2001 SE = 13560 (wtf ????) :(

Shouldn't I be getting 16,000 or more in 3D Mark 2001 SE?

Any tips on making the scores better in either benchmarks?

Also, my mobo memory timings are currently using by SPD (maybe I need to do manual timings?)

Thanks
Sly

wow, i see a problem. Well even with your ram timing you should still score higher than that. So i don't think its your ram. My score is only 700 behind your score...and mine is [email protected] with ddr2100..

I think soul burner might have a solution to that. Since he runs the same setup almost. good luck. :thumb:

What kind of RAM do you have? It just says Corsair XMS...?

Mine at all stock settings and no overclock did 14,800, you should get around the same.

A few things to try:

1. DirectX 9.0b www.microsoft.com/directx
2. Nvidia Detonator 44.03 Drivers (the 45.23s suck, I score at least 1500 points low with them in 3DMark01 and the image quality sucks too). However, the 45.23s are way better for 3DMark03.
3. All relevant chipset software (INF) installed from your motherboard CD, and the latest BIOS from their website.
4. Make sure AGP8x is enabled, get the Coolbits registry (www.guru3d.com) to check if you don't have it already.
5. Set sliders to High Performance mode rather than best image quality
6. Make sure AA/AF are disabled.

A couple other things...is 427 the highest your card would go on the core? Mine goes all the way to 510 and will go even higher when I get better cooling. Your 3DMark03 score is looking good so I wouldn't think the card is the problem. I'll see if I can think up anything else.

Thanks Soulburner for all the tips to try.

Here's more info:

1) I checked the RAM and yes the Corsair is XMS PC 3200 DDR400Mhz

2) I'm currently running detonator drivers at 45.23

3) All relevant chipset (INF) software was installed from the Gigabyte CD (no errors or exclamatiom marks in hardware manager)

4) I'm running Directx 9.0b

5) Running AGP 8x

6) All sliders are set to High performance and AA/AF is off

For the overclock settings, what settings do you recommend?

Core: 500+?
Memory: 940+?

My MSI FX 5900 card has fans on BOTH sides of the card so cooling is good. Plus I have a huge 12 (yes 12!) fan airflow system running in my modded case to keep things cool :)

Cheers

ok, i went back to 44.03 and upped my OC on the card to:

Core: 509mhz
Memory: 951Mhz

Scores:

3D Mark 2003 5587
3d Mark 2001 15075

A little better on the 2001 but less on the 2003 (as you said with the 44.03 drivers)

All in all these are so-so numbers...should be better though

don't use the omega driver if you are, use the original 44.03 for 3dmark01.

Yeah I'm getting 14000 with my system so u should be getting a lot better scores then that.
Try this
1. Shut down all open processes before benchmraking
2. Upgrade to patch 330 (or 320:?: :?: )
3.Don't put the settings on SUPER high res. Like most people that 20K run it in 640x480 and super ugly stuff. Also, disable all the other system tests (all u need to get a 3DMARK score are the game tests)

The 44.03 Omega drivers have a "Performance" option that include speed optimizations. I score well with them and would recommend them over the 45.23 or regular 44.03 drivers.

Actually no, everyone should run the test on default settings (including 1024x768 resolution). Hit the default button before you run it. Those 20k scores you are seeing (including mine coming soon) are run on default.

A couple things:

Your 2003 score will be a lot higher with the 45.23 drivers (2001 is faster with Omega 44.03).

That's a nice overclock. One thing to check though is if it has gone too far. Lower the core by 10mhz and see if your score goes up (in 3DMark03). If it does, keep going until you find the "sweet spot". Mine will run over 500 too, but 490 is the fastest. This can also vary depending on your cooling (mine isn't great). Same goes for the memory. You will just have to play with it until you find what works.

Remember. 3DMark03 will be the best for finding your best video card settings, while 01 will be very good for finding your best CPU/RAM settings (03 isnt really affected by system changes, only video). So, once you find your best score for 03, use those video card settings to get the best score in 01.

Also, set your AGP Aperture size in BIOS to 128mb.

Thanks Soulburner for the extra tips.

Its ain't easy trying to find the right drivers (to balance the score between 2001 and 2003). :(

I may try the omega drivers to see what's what. Finding that sweet spot looks like a great test to do. :)

homeworld1031tx,
I didn't know that 2003 only needs the game test to do a score...great! (won't have to wait so long to get a score and do more test!)

Thanks!

Both of them work the same way, only the 4 game tests determine your score. On 2001 you can just select only the 4 in the options, but in 2003 if you have the free version you can't. You can just hit ESC after the Mother Nature test completes though and it should give you your score.
