It should work just fine. I haven't tried the home video concept, but you can hook up your regular VCR/DVD players and display it onto your monitor (or to a TV via S-Video if you so desire). But you might look at getting the PlayTV Box II as it will display your TV output at 1024 resolution (very nice). :D
