they were different colours before and also some looked a bit different, just in general

Looks like they have been overwrote. Kheldar upgraded the forum software and must have made a mistake and replaced the regular smiles and other images to the default by mistake. :(

Correct - It is only the database that is backed up, not the images. Might be able to find some cached versions on my other PC's though.
