Ok i am untarring the file as follows:
tar -xzf barcode.tar.gz
once in that folder I am making the make files:
sh ./configure

and that is where I am having the error

Ok, try it without the "sh". The correct order is,
untar the file
"tar -xzf barcode.tar.gz"
cd to the directory created
"cd barcode/"
run configure
"./configure"
if configure completes without any errors run make
"make"
if make completes without any errors do (as root)
"make install"
and then it's a good idea to do "ldconfig" to update any shared libs.

Could be, what version of gcc do you have installed? ( do "gcc --version").

2.95

Thats a good version, try reinstalling it and also have a look at the config.log file in the top level directory of the source code for any configure errors.
