  • mobo or CPU?

I just threw my t-bird 1.4 onto an asus a7v266 board. It ran for all of about 5 seconds, then the cpu fan just turned off.

I took the HS off to make sure I had enough thermal compound on it, so I'm pretty sure I didn't fry the CPU.

I didn't change any of the default jumper/switch settings.

All I had in the system was the cpu fan, 1 HD, vid card, and RAM.
You think I got a bad mobo or what?

Note: it dosn't beep and I'm kinda afraid to turn it on if the cpu fan isn't spinning.

Good, don't power it up at this point.
    Have you got another fan?
Start with the simple stuff, hope for the best.

if I take out the cpu and just plug a fan in, should it spin anyway?

Yes it will. It either could have been the fan power header on your motherboard that died or the actual fan itself died, however they don't usually just die. What type was it?
