not sure what's goin on here

I got a physical memory dump today so I rebooted
it booted fine, then windows would not respond, so I rebooted again and got a non system disk error
I checked how hot the HDD was at this time, and it was nice and cool

let it sit for a bit and booted again, it booted fine
ran mbm fine without changing any of the default settings and heard grind grind grind

I let it sit for a bit longer as I took a HD out of another computer to replace the other one
then booted up just to see, ran mbm and selected asus for the temp sensor and a couple other settings

now it seems to be running fine
could that sound have been the cpu fan turning off and on?? or was it the HDD?

I didn't get a chance to feel the HDD while it was happening to find out :-)

    system specs
    Asus a7v266-e
    T-bird 1.4
    Volcano 6Cu+ cpu fan
    Quantum Fireball 13G 5400rpm

Ahhh! Quantum, I wouldn't trust a quantum with anything. Back it up and soon!

Sounds like you were lucky then, I've had much bigger losses in the past before. :(
