help with RAM Read/Write error

A buddy of mine is having problems with his "New" RAM.
He has an old P2 398 running Windows 98SE and an original 64MB of RAM. He recently tried to install a 128MB RAM chip. Now, when he boots, he gets a message which goes along the lines of
"write/read failure, expecting 00000000F457, reading 0000000003e5845

decreasing available memory"

any ideas what could be causing this?

(Sorry i dont have any more info on the comp, but my buddy knows f*** all about comps and i was not able to find out what type of MOBO he has)

Is the 128MB module double sided and has it been used without the 64MB module installed plus has Memtest86+ been run on both modules separately?
