I wanted to get some viewpoints as to whether or not adding a sound card to a system would help performance than by using a motherboards integrated sound chip?

Performance in what way? If you buy a quality board, you'll get better quality sound (as long as your speakers don't suck). If you don't have a PCI lock in the BIOS, you can usually overclock better with a PCI audio device, but I'm not sure I understand your meaning of performance

What I mean is, do integrated sound controllers take away from cpu performance? Don't soundcards like audigy2 have their own sound processor similar to a graphics card? Wouldn't that improve performance in games?

Not really. Modern processor have a good deal of power to utilize for multiple tasks. In games, it is very unlikely you would notice any difference between a PCI audio board and the one built into the mainboard (assuming you are using a recent motherboard, of course).
