External CD writer problem

Purchased Asus crw-5232as-u external cd writer for computer running win 98. Read reviews thought it would be simple. Had burning problems, then checked sync under its hardware info, and seemed to burn. Then tried to look at it in the cd rom, have problems trying to look at it with windows explorer,explorer hangs, can't end task it. Want to finalize cd, or atleast check if it is. I am used to Roxio, would it work better?
Should I just send it back and by a different brand?
