Which is better QuinCunx Anti-Aliasing or 4X Anti-Aliasing. In quake 3 I'm getting 60-80 FPS with the QAA on and 40-60 with the 4XAA. Does that mean the 4X is doing a better job at smoothing my pixels?

I seem to recall having read a review comapring the two, and on closeup Quincunx looks to be much the same as 4x without the performance hit.Onyx

Quincunx smooths jaggies "about" as well as 4X plus reduces texture aliasing slightly. However Quincunx blurs textures a lot more.
4X gives much sharpers textures than Quincunx but is slower. You'd be best of using 2X FSAA & 32 or 64 tap anisotropic filtering if you want better image quality. Quincunx is too blurry to be considered "good"
