  • soc 478 motherboard with pci express?

Is there a socket 478 motherboard that supports pci express? I want to get a new motherboard and use all of my old components, especially the P4 3.2 gig cpu.

Or, will this cpu fit in any other type of board?

ASUS makes a board that is available in Europe only that does this, extremely hard to find. P4G or something like that. Google European Asus retailers. If you look on the ASUS site, it will give you the correct model number as the one I listed is surely wrong.

P4GD1 is the board to find for what you want to do.

            I looked that up. That model is a 914P socket . I need a 478. Is this compatable with a 478 cpu?

If you can't tell the difference between a s478 and t775 pic on that page the nav tree near the top of the page should've rang bells.

First off, there is only one pic on that page and it is neither a s478 or a t775 so I dont know what the hell your talking about.

Second, I found this board and I think it will work, what do you think casecutter?

jjordan27 the previous Asus board (P4GD1) is, in fact, for a socket 478 CPU. Please pay very careful attention cuz I'm only going to explain this once: A chipset and a CPU are two entirely different things!! The people that you are dealing with know far more about what they speak than you give them credit for.

I admit that I know far less than most people in these forums, thats not the why I got pissed though. I am not challenging anyone's tech. knowledge. I just think its rude when someone looks down on me because I dont realize what the numbers he is stating applys to. Im no expert, thats why Im here getting help.

So what your're saying is that even though I have a P4 3.2 gig cpu in my socket 478 motherboad it doesnt mean I have to get another socket 478 motherboard?

What you need to do is find one of those motherboards, then you would be swapping your CPU into it. The 915 chipset is used as it is for PCI-E. That board is definitely a Socket 478 board. They are just very hard to find. I say a link to an ASrock board in another thread, but you would be wise to try to get the ASUS board if possible.

                        bit harsh!
i dont know that much, but can't you put a s478 p4 into a pentium m motherboard? that gives you a large range of boards to choose from, but, again, this may not be possible.

I just assumed that since I had a socket 478 motherboard now I had to get another one. Are you saying that any P4 cpu will fit into any P4 motherboard?

If so, thats great news and thank you. Please reply cause Im not sure if thats what your saying or not.

My justification in buying a new board is that I can almost get one for free with the money I save on the pci express 6800 GS instead of agp. If my cpu will fit in this board, I would like to get it. It had ddr and ddr2. It will also support a dual core processor when Im ready to upgrade. What do ya'll think about this??

If you intend on keeping your Soecket 478 CPU, then you must use a Socket 478 motherboard. There are no Socket 478 boards on the planet that support DDR2. You would need to get a new CPU and Motherboard (Socket 775) for that. The ASUS motherboard I linked for you is a Socket 478 motherboard that runs DDR memory, not DDR2. If you are worried about future upgrades, then wait and get a Socket 774 CPU/Motherboard. It does make more sense.
