What programs use what language?

im now getting interested in programming, yet know sweet FA about it. i kinow that you get C and C++ languages, and that you get visual basic for making them, but what sort of programs are made whith what language? expanding upon this further: which laguage is most likely to be used for:
games,
office applications,
windows customizing programs,
file editing programs (think dbpoweramp,or ulead)?

i profess complete ignorance, and hope that someone can help.
