  • getting 4gigs to work on 32bit windows xp.

I currently got another 2 gigs for me and dxdiag and system currently only shows 3gigs available. I tried things on the net such as disabling the page file. And I know my mobo supports 4gigs because in the BIOs it says I got 4gigs in there, and usable.

The thing that bothers me is that even though I have my pagefile disabled, dxdiag shows this.

pagefile: 183mb used, 2727mb available. Is it reading my ram as a page file now?

    Thanks for the help

WinXP supports up to 16GB of physical memory. What is your mainboard? Just because it can read the 4GB does not mean it supports it. You might also check for a BIOS update for the board.

      I use an
Asus A8N-SLI nForce4 SLI Athlon 64(FX) Skt939 DDR ATX Motherboard

and I guess I wasn't very clear before. In in the bios it says this on 2 lines.

      Installed Memory 4096mb
      Usable Memory 4096mb

that pretty much tells me that it is supported.

Yes your page file is counted by Windows memory mapping to be part of the memory.

More about the full 4GB memory limit can be found here.

I know how to edit the boot.ini but where do you add the 'switch' the /pae command in the file, another forum said to try that as well.

As far as I know (someone else may correct this) you need an Intel CPU to get PAE to work.

yea, i read that, but the person insisted it wasn't, oh well. But for good measure, how do you do it anyways?
