i got my GFD yesterday, and decided to play with the 550 that came outta here... get the hang of it before i slap it on my new 850, anyway, i tried 650mhz first, left the voltage alone, and nothing, wouldnt boot up, turned voltage up 1.55, 1.6 it wont do anything if i turn the mhz up past 600..... any ideas???

not that im aware of, i was extra careful when i did it so as not to tear anything up, i put the GFD on the 850, and it wont go over 900..... ?!?!?!??! it'll get halfway thru boot up at 950, then just hangs up... at no voltage adjustment, or .05 up ........ i dunno?
its a IBM Aptiva, with a IBM S30 mobo and a fuggin American Megatrends Flash BIOS.... could that have the processor "locked" in at a certain speed???

no go, anything over 900mhz, from stock voltage to 1.90 in every increment, it wont boot up, the monitor wont even come off standby.... right now its at 900mhz, no voltage adjustments..... anything else is a dead fish..... could i have got a bad GFD?????
i mean, its damn simple in construction, but, stranger things have happened
Slot A's:hammer:

It is possible that you got a bad GFD, but also take a look at your power supply. If its a pre-built computer it might be that your power supply is the source of your frustration. They only seem to put enough power into those things to run what they installed. Almost no headroom in the power department. My Athlon classic started out as a Compaq. By putting in a new PSU, I was able to get my 600Mhz Athlon stable at 850MHz. Try that and see how it goes.
Good Luck

JealousMidget could very well have the source pin pointed there as a lot of the early Athlons systems had anything from 235w PSU's fitted which was ok for a basic system but soon went bye bye when asked to supply more power. :smokin:

ok, new case came today.... installed fans in every open place on this case (4) got the 400w p/s in, fired it up, and played for a while, then got bored with the new smell, so i decided to have a go at the overclocking again...... 950mhz on the 850 with about 1.6 volts yields a wonderful start, then after about 2 minutes of running in windows idle, it decides its time for a reboot, so i pull the side cover off and have a looksee, and i can barely touch the heat sink on the processor, i know Golden Orbs are junk, (i wish i knew then what i know now, i would have ran from the Thermaltake products like a white man through Harlem) but, does 100mhz of overclocking tax the system THAT much? since the cover is off the processor card so i can get to the debug port, the back half of the card is open, and i couldnt touch the back half of the processor card, it was that damn hot.. is this normal???? so, i guess next question is, who makes a GOOD heat sink/ does anyone make one that retrofits the "heat plate", something that touches the top of the processor and cache chips, i cant see how the heat plate can help matters any, especially since it doesnt even touch the caches, the space is filled with gray goop.... insights, comments, help????

It's obviously running far too hot then and yes the Orbs really arn't suitable for doing this with. Checkout some specilist cooling stores around as it's likely that they will still have some HSF's to suit that CPU which would be much better than the Orb. Also when passing certain speeds the L2 cache divider will have to be changed with software and if I can find the link again to it I'll post it here as this could be part of the problem too. :smokin:

I use a Pal Alpha cooler with dual deltas (I don't remember the model # right now). Slot A coolers are getting harder to find, but definitely worth the effort. My heatsink is never hot to the touch. I never figured out how to get the L2 cache divider to work, I got my O'C using the multiplyer. I think the motherboard that I was using at the time was not happy. Might try it again since I have replaced the MB. Who knows I might be able to get a Gig out of it.
