an yet i still cant run quake 3 on a radeon X800XL under vista without screen corruption bah ATI suck at building drivers with good stable OpenGL

Uh, the problem you are having is with Vista, not ATI. Try running games in Vista on an Nvidia 8-series card. Screen corruption beats random crashes.

ATI drivers are fine for OpenGL. Nvidia cards tend to do better, but the drivers are fine.
