  • i think my volcano 7+ is defective

I just recieved my thermaltake volcano 7+ in the mail today and had a question regarding the heatsink. The copper fins are not straight up and down, they(all of them) are bent one way-So they look curved. (((( instead of |||||. I was wondering if it was supposed to be like this-is it harmful- or should i send the volcano 7+ back.

Your fan will still cool reasonably well, the the bend in the fins will inhibit the airflow from the base of the sink. Just my opinion, but I'd see about getting it replaced with one that doesn't look like it lost a boxing match.

Click here and compare the sink to yours.

If yours is seriously bent, id be getting it replaced.

i think the fins on the volcano7+ are supposed to be bent...bcos they are made with skiving technique....if they are all bent the same then i don't think it's damaged :afro:

That's it and it's cause by the way the fins are lifted from the base. Skiving is what I think they call it and a few good manufacturers are now using the process which leaves a slight curve to the fins. :smokin:

I just got another one in my hot hands today and definately there is a slight curve caused by the fin lifting process but that shouldn't hurt/hinder cooling though. :smokin:

Here's a pic that shows the curve that you should have.

yea incidentally, i think the curving actually helps cooling slightly bcos it forces the airstream to brush against the fin surface more:afro:

Well I've got mine sittin' in front of me now and mine looks even better than the one in the pic. Too bad I don't have a half decent webcam to take a pic. :(
A real shame is that I don't shave as it's a pretty good mirror too. :D

lol yea my mcx used to be like a mirror....but now it's oxidized from me touching the base

although i don't think that effects performance at all:afro:

Yeah, I don't think it'd effect performance at all. And if you want it to be shiny again you can give it a polish with some brasso. ;)
