  • Help overclocking?

With my AC on, I get realtemp readings of 35 degrees or so, maybe a degree less, on idle, or just having msn messenger etc running.

    Wolfdale E8400 @ 3ghz,
    OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS 600W
    EVGA 512-P3-N862-AR GeForce 9600GT Superclocked 512MB
    G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
    Zalman CNPS9500
GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard

Last time I tried taking up the Clock to about 360, locking the PCIE @ 100, setting timings, taking off the down clocking options EIST etc in the bios, the computer became very unstable.
Even after I set it back to normal, temps were really high, so I just did a "load optimized' defaults from the bios.

ANy help on what to do to get a decent OC?

Post me what you are using now and I will advise you for 3.6 if you like, how does that sound to start with?

Also, what BIOS are you using?

This is Just a template I use to ask people their settings, pay no attention to the numbers in it, replace with yours

On the MAIN Page of the BIOS hit F8. Or you can also see it with CPU_z in the Mainboard Tab >>>

              Re: Help overclocking?

OK, well to overclock you have to disable EIST, and C1E first. Please look on your ram sticker and see the spec voltage as it is likely NOT 1.8V. There is MANY Models that range in Spec Voltage from 1.8 up to 2.1 so best you check, and if it is 1.8, set 1.9

F4 is fine, F5 is only update for new CPU and DES so you dont need it. Yes it is safe to flash, see my guide pinned in this section if you ever do want to flash. DO NOT USE @BIOS!!!

Here is some suggested ranges to start with for 3.6

Robust Graphics Booster___________ [Auto]That is ODD you do not see this? Try hitting Control + F1 on the MAIN Page and then go back in MIT Section and see if you see it. Either way, not a biggie

              CPU Clock Ratio ____________ [9]
              CPU Host Clock Control_ [Enabled]
              CPU Host Frequency (MHz)__________ [402]
PCI Express Frequency (Mhz)_______ [100] << Please SET NOW
              C.I.A. 2__________________________ [Disabled]
              System Memory Multiplier (SPD)____ [2.00] (2.00 X 400FSB = 800MHz Ram)
DRAM Timing Selectable_______ SPD __ [Manual]

              Performance Enhance = [Standard]

              CAS Latency Time________________ 5
              Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay_________5
              Dram RAS# Precharge Delay_______5
              Precharge Delay (tRAS)__________ 15

              ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD)_________3-4
Rank Write to READ Delay________3-6 (9-11Benchmark later)
              Write to Precharge Delay_________4-6
Refresh to ACT Delay______________ (48-50) 52-62
              Read to Precharge Delay__________ 3-6
              Static tRead Value_______________ 7-10
Static tRead Phase Adjust________ 1-31 <<< Do not adjust, meaning leave at AUTO or Zero or 1-31

              System Voltage Control____ [Manual]
DDR2 OverVoltage Control__ [+0.300V] --> i AM SEEING DDR18V @ 1.888v (Set to 1.9-2.1 depending on your sticker as mentioned abouve)

              PCI-E OverVoltage Control_ [+0.1V]
              FSB OverVoltage Control___ [+0.1V]
              (G)MCH OverVoltage Control [+0.1V] << may need +1.5 or +.2
CPU Voltage Control_______ [1.325] << This is only decided by your chip and your board. A good starting point for 3.6 is 1.325-1.4 but you may need more or less. I would say start way high, then lower until it wont boot, then go back up a notch or two.

                K thanks!

BTW: What program to use to run temp readings?
ALl the ones I use give different values....don't know what to adjust the TJMAX too.
Saw something recently that intel released some info on the chips, but nothing updated in the softwares that are floating around yet.

                  Re: Help overclocking?

CoreTemp or Realtemp. If you use realtemp, be sure to read the documentation so you can configure it properly.

TjMax for 45Nm is 95, everyone seems to agree on.

The above software both have been updated for this, and you can change the TjMax in both of them.

Everest Ultimate also has been updated and allows the same.

Let me know if you need links to any of that

                    Didn't work.
After reboot, core speed was still @ 3ghz...
when i recheked thebios, all the clock speeds were same, except voltages.

                      Re: Help overclocking?

You need to post WHAT didn't work. Sounds like you either have something set wrong, or not enough volts.

Please post what full settings you used that fail

                        Re: Help overclocking?

Put everyhing as you said, but I used the lower end values for the ones where you gave me a range.
                        eg:Write to Precharge Delay_________4-6
                        I used 4.

For the voltage, I changed it to 1.325

Also, found the ddr2 voltage thing, after I CTRL + F1, changed that as well.

All the CPU clock settings, etc, and ram timings were at auto when I checked back the bios.
                        The votages were unchanged.

                          Re: Help overclocking?

Well you have to put all the HIGHEST Settings I gave first. Then once stable you lower one at a time. And 1.325 may ore may not be enough either

A double reboot is normal when making BIOS changes and means they are OK, but not necessarily stable.

A triple reboot or more means incorrect settings, and your BIOS will be returned to all defaults. So that is why you saw voltages unchanged I would assume

But wouldn't going with the higher voltages be more damanging?

Ok so I'll setup everything again with a 1.4 voltage?
There is a CPU clock OFFSET CLOCK setting, what to do about that?
                            (it was intially 0.5)
